Michigan’s Keon Sabb tops college football transfer portal’s 5 best-available players

Here are the latest top portal options still available.

Impact defender Keon Sabb, who became the finest player available in a declining market for the 2024 cycle, officially entered the transfer system, causing Michigan to suffer its first significant loss. The majority of the top prospects on the transfer portal have already registered at new schools as the spring semester drop-add dates for college football have passed. But with another coaching move this week—Shawn Elliott departed his position at Georgia State to join Shane Beamer’s staff at South Carolina—Sabb is now one of the few high-impact alternatives available, and more might be added.

There isn’t a single top-50 player who is still uncommitted at this point in the offseason. Later in the spring, there will be an additional gateway window. A number of players, including two from Washington after the Huskies signed former Arizona coach Jedd Fisch, have opted to withdraw after accessing the portal in recent days. Players frequently look in a different direction after a coaching change before meeting with the new staff to evaluate fit.

The top players on the portal as of Friday, February 16 are shown below:

1. KEON SABB, S, MICHIGAN

On Friday, Sabb made his way into the transfer portal, marking his first Wolverine casualty since Jim Harbaugh. The team had just won its first national championship in twenty-five years.Despite Rod Moore and Makari Paige, two seasoned defensive backs, returning, Sabb, who finished the 2024 season with 28 tackles and two interceptions, was expected to start in the Michigan secondary. In Michigan’s victory over the National Championship, Sabb recorded six tackles. Leading all defensive backs will be Washington. Following Stephen Adegoke’s choice this week to remain with the Houston Texans despite Sherrone Moore’s efforts, the Wolverines are employing a defensive backs coach.Sam Webb of TheMichiganInsider reports that Lamar Morgan, the defense coordinator for Louisiana, is “now on deck and the courtship process won’t take long.” One of the first tasks facing Michigan’s new secondary coach will be keeping Sabb in Ann Arbor. After Jim Harbaugh left to join the NFL, Moore was promoted to head coach, and he has done an outstanding job keeping his team together before spring training.

Michigan players have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal given the coaching change. Per Hummer, Moore’s ascendance was not a shock. His status as next in line has been among the worst kept college football secrets this season. That’s a good thing, too, because Moore’s presence is a huge reason why sources told 247Sports Michigan’s roster was to remain largely together with minimal attrition, at least during this window.

2. TACARIO DAVIS, CB, ARIZONA

Tacario Davis, a cornerback for Arizona, recently registered on the transfer portal as the exodus from Tucson keeps happening. This past season, the 6-foot-4, 195-pound soon-to-be junior started 11 games for the Wildcats and led the Pac-12 in pass breakups with 15. In addition to finishing with a career-high 25 total tackles and an interception, Davis was named to the Pac-12 second team. With several years of eligibility left, he should be a coveted commodity for teams in need of a cornerback after making major progress as a sophomore.

3. RASHAD AMOS, RB, MIAMI UNIVERSITY

After leaving the Gamecocks after three seasons in search of better opportunities with Miami, the former four-star South Carolina signee is once again available after rushing for 1,075 yards and ten touchdowns in 2023. Because of his performance in a major role this season for the first time in his career, he is the best ballcarrier available and should fetch power conference offers.During Will Muschamp’s final season at South Carolina, Rashad Amos averaged 5.5 yards per rush as a freshman in the SEC in 2020, but he saw little action.

4. JORDAN MCCLOUD, QB, JMU

Jordan McCloud, the top quarterback accessible through the transfer channel, completed 68.9% of his passes for 3,400 yards and 32 touchdowns while intercepting nine passes. He was a major contributor to James Madison’s 11-1 record. This season, McCloud has also run for 311 yards and eight touchdowns. McCloud, Dillon Gabriel of Oklahoma, Jayden Daniels of LSU, and Drake Maye of North Carolina were the four quarterbacks to pass for at least 3,400 yards and rush for at least 300 yards. The clubs that had expressed the greatest interest in McCloud prior to Auburn acquiring Robby Ashford in the middle of January were South Carolina and Georgia.

5. VINCENT HOLMES, S, WASHINGTON

Vincent Holmes
Vincent Holmes was regarded as a four-star talent after high school. This past season at Washington, he was a redshirt. The 6-foot, 174-pound safety did not record any stats in his four games as a true freshman, even though he did appear in the Pac-12 Championship Game against Oregon. Deion Sanders and Colorado shown a great deal of interest in Holmes throughout his high school recruitment. In addition, Arizona, Oregon State, UCLA, USC, Washington State, and other universities extended offers to him.Texas A&M cornerback Tyreek Chappell, who was once among the top prospects still available, withdrew his name on Friday. GigEm247 was informed by sources that Chappell had first used the portal on December 6 of last year. season and did not participate in the Aggies’ TaxAct Texas Bowl. Upon his return, he finds a cornerback room that has been replenished with five new players: five-star high school recruit Terry Bussey, Alabama-Birmingham’s BJ Mayes, Florida’s Jaydon Hill, Cal Poly’s Donovan Saunders, Kansas State’s Will Lee, and former five-star prospect Dezz Ricks. At their prior locations, a few of the newcomers worked under current A&M assistants. According to Jeff Tarpley of GigEm247, there are also returnees like Sam McCall and Jayvon Thomas who saw action in the previous campaign.
