Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Spurs, is being considered to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool
At the end of the current campaign, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will step down, and a list of possible successors is already being circulated.
Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has already been mentioned as a possible successor to John Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, should the German depart at the end of the current campaign.
Liverpool announced the shocking news early on Friday morning, capping a week in which the Reds secured a spot at Wembley Stadium for the Carabao Cup final this year. This summer, Klopp will conclude his nine-year tenure at Anfield, having led the team to unprecedented success during that time, winning both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Thoughts as to who could fill the German’s big boots on Merseyside have seen a list of potential candidates drawn up already with a number of familiar names linked with the soon-to-be vacant position. Reds legend Xabi Alonso is the current frontrunner.
Since taking over at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer, the former Celtic manager has made an impression. As of right now, the team is sitting fifth in the Premier League standings, eight points ahead of seventh-place Brighton and eight points behind league leaders Liverpool. With Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin moving to North London in January, Postecoglou has brought in an exciting, attacking style of football.
The 58-year-old has acknowledged that he grew up loving Liverpool and being a fan of the team. He remarked: “It was the 1970s, so you could go either way: at the time, it seemed like they [in Australia] only showed Man United or Liverpool.
“Like any kid, I had the posters up on my wall, so Liverpool was my team. But you grow up, things change. I used to love ‘Happy Days’ back then too, but I don’t have pictures of the Fonz on my wall today either. So it’s just the way things are.”
The Spanish midfielder managed Real Madrid’s youth academy and Real Sociedad in La Liga before taking over as manager of Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen. Between 2004 and 2009, Alonso made 210 appearances for Liverpool, leading the team to Champions League victory in 2005.
The 43-year-old Steven Gerrard, a fellow former Liverpool midfielder, is currently managing at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia. Other names on the list include Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann. Then comes the sight that Australian Ange Postecoglou will not be pleasing to Spurs supporters.
