This college football season, the Michigan football team has drawn a lot of attention, and not just because of their perfect record and top ranking.

One of the biggest stories in college football this season has been the NCAA’s ongoing investigation into the Wolverines for allegedly engaging in illegal in-person scouting.

Since Michigan defeated Ohio State and won the Big Ten for the third straight year, which demonstrated that the sign-stealing probably wasn’t giving them much of an advantage, the story has become less and less newsworthy, though some people still bring it up regularly.

One individual who has brought it up recently is Eli Drinkwitz, the coach of the Missouri football team. Drinkwitz and his Tigers are preparing to take on Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl. While he was talking about the game on ESPN, Drinkwitz feigned to receive a call from Connor Stalions, the Michigan football staff member in charge of the sign-stealing plot.

Still, it didn’t end there. Drinkwitz appeared to be making a lighthearted joke when he made the first remark about the Stalions and Michigan, but when he was speaking recently about the College Football Playoff, it sounded like he thought that the scandal might prevent the Wolverines from qualifying.

“Allow me to ask you a question if we’re going to have some really tough talks. Will a playoff-bound team be eliminated and Florida State added back in if a star player on that team gets hurt? Says Drinkwitz on Sirius XM Radio. That seemed like a completely absurd justification to me. Even though I’m an SEC guy, that one really got to me. It also seemed like we were picking and choosing which lens we were going to look through, failing to take into account the possibility that a team (Michigan) might have an unfair advantage in some of their games.

Football at Florida State finished 13-0 and won the ACC, but they were not included in the playoffs. The committee’s decision has sparked a lot of debate, and it seems that some people felt Michigan ought to have been excluded.

But the Wolverines are headed to the CFP, where on New Year’s Day, they will play #4 Alabama in the Rose Bowl. Though NCAA investigations such as this one usually take a long time to finish, the sign-stealing case will eventually be resolved.
