The Chicago Bears game on Monday night resulted in a skirmish that broke nickel back Kyler Gordon’s face mask. The NFL has commented on the incident. Brandon Powell, a wide receiver for the Minnesota Vikings, and Gordon were not fined for the incident; the league only imposed fines for nine plays in Week 12.
In an odd scene on Monday, Gordon was given a 15-yard penalty for what referee Alex Kemp initially called “unsportsmanlike conduct on No. 6 for taking his helmet off” after blocking Powell during a Jaylon Johnson interception return. Kemp went on to explain that Gordon was being punished for engaging in taunting behavior.
After the punishment was applied, Gordon attempted to argue his point while holding up his helmet with the face mask partially removed. According to the replays, Gordon’s first block of Powell propelled the two players into the Vikings bench, where they engaged in a brief struggle.
Gordon remarked, “I drove my dude into the benches and we just kind of got into it.” “Obviously, having to be driven back is not cool. He pulled down on my face mask because he didn’t want to fall backward. That’s just the way things are. Only football-related content.
Gordon was shocked to hear that he had been reported for taunting.
He remarked, “I mean, it’s hard to taunt when someone is pulling down your face mask.”
In addition to receiving two penalties during Monday’s game, Gordon also committed a 26-yard pass interference foul late in the first half against T.J. Hockenson, a tight end for the Vikings.
However, the second-year cornerback also made two of the more significant defensive plays in the Bears’ 12–10 victory. He intercepted a tipped Joshua Dobbs pass for the final of four Bears takeaways and stopped Hockenson a yard short of the line to gain on fourth-and-7 early in the third quarter.
The Bears mic’d up Gordon for the game, so the altercation with Powell was well-recorded.
