Everybody is scared Pundit admits ‘Suprised’ Tottenham and Man Utd deal could happen
Ryan Sessegnon is linked to Manchester United, and Tottenham’s unexpected January loan deals are discussed amid concerns about FFP
We are excited to have Paul Robinson, a former England goalkeeper, join us as an exclusive columnist. Paul will share his thoughts on the main topics of discussion at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium every week.
Paul Robinson acknowledges that such deals may happen this month but says he would be shocked if Manchester United closed a January deal for Ryan Sessegnon of Tottenham after sending Sergio Reguilon back.
The Englishman may move to Old Trafford because of the “open channel” that was left after the previous deal for his Spanish teammate, according to Miguel Delaney of The Independent in his Reading the Game newsletter from January 5.
Robinson believes that teams are all currently so “scared” of FFP breaches after Everton and Nottingham Forest were charged that loan deals could happen which “surprise a few people”.
Though the 23-year-old Sessegnon has missed almost the entire season due to surgery, the former England goalie believes it is still unlikely that United will make a move before the deadline, and Spurs manager needs to exercise caution when making departures.
Under Ange Postecoglou, the former Fulham player has made just one appearance, entering late in the FA Cup victory over Burnley on January 5.
He exclusively told Tottenham News, “It would be difficult for the manager to sanction any players to leave at the moment.”
Tottenham needs to add players because of the number of players they currently lack.
Reguilon’s return to Tottenham under Ange seems unlikely given that his time at Manchester United clearly didn’t work out for him.
“Sessegnon’s issue would be his deficiency in playing football for the first team. If United selected him based only on his lack of Premier League playing time, I’d be shocked.
“But, one of the reasons we are witnessing such a quiet January transfer window is that everyone is now terrified of FFP and the profit and sustainability law that Everton and Forest were hit with.
“Everyone is afraid of the FFP, but deals like this might surprise a few people because loans could happen.”
