Hammers leading the race to sign ….
West Ham are actively pursuing a deal to sign Celtic’s Matt O’Riley.
A few days before the summer transfer market closed, Leeds and Southampton both indicated interest in signing the English-born player, according to Sky Sports News. The 23-year-old recently extended his contract for a further four years in the summer, thus the Glasgow giants are not willing to part ways with him.
With nine goals and eight assists in 24 games thus far this season, the midfielder is in fantastic form for Celtic. O’Riley, who spent £1.6 million to join Celtic from MK Dons in January 2022, has performed exceptionally well in both domestic and European competitions.
There are very few choices for West Ham in the midfield, and manager David Moyes seems hesitant to use Conor Coventry at all. The Hammers’ head coach has made frequent use of Tomas Soucek, James Ward Prowse, and Edson Alvarez.
Considering Alvarez’s importance, purchasing a backup defensive midfielder could be a wiser move than trying to box O’Riley.
