All Blacks great Williams calls Eddie Jones ‘a disgrace’
All Blacks great launched a stinging attack on Eddie Jones on Thursday, calling him “a disgrace” who “obviously lied” to the Australian players and fans.
Six weeks after Jones left the Wallabies due to their disappointing performance at the Rugby World Cup, the Australian was named Japan’s new head coach on Wednesday.
Williams, a two-time World Cup winner who is currently a pundit, said: “It’s very sad, isn’t it? The sixty-three-year-old has rejected being linked to the position on numerous occasions.
The successful boxer and rugby league player Williams told Australian network Channel Nine, “My thoughts on this whole saga is that he lied.”
He undoubtedly misled the Australian Rugby Union, the players, and the general public.
“What a disgrace.”
In his nine Test matches with the Wallabies, Jones won two of them.
Including the worst World Cup they have ever had, where they were eliminated in the pool stages.
After being dismissed by England, he assumed leadership in January.
“My second point is that I feel bad for Japan. His record is self-evident,” Williams continued.
Jones, who will formally assume the role on January 1, is well-respected in Japan, where he coached for three years starting in 2012.
In a post published on Thursday, Nikkan Sports criticized the lack of “transparency” and stated that it was obvious that Jones would be hired.
“There are also doubts regarding the fairness of the process,” said the statement.
“Some of the people involved have said it felt like a rigged race.”
