Postecoglou thwarted, with key midfield target to agree Chelsea deal despite Tottenham links
Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is reportedly ‘ready’ to sign a new contract with the Blues if he continues to receive assurances over his playing time.
Since the summer, the England international has been strongly connected with a move to Tottenham, where Ange Postecoglou is eager to sign a new center-mid.
As a result of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s anticipated departure from Spurs, which could happen in January or at the end of the current campaign, their manager is looking into possible replacements.
Gallagher might have been worried that his playing time might decrease as a result of Chelsea signing Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.
However, that hasn’t been the case thus far, as the 23-year-old has started each of Chelsea’s eight Premier League games to date. He has also demonstrated his value to the team by donning the captain’s armband five times.
Gallagher is reportedly set to stay at Chelsea longer despite being a target for Tottenham, according to recent reports.
It’s not surprising that Pochettino wants to lock him down to new terms before the transfer window reopens in January because his current contract is slated to expire in June 2025.
Gallagher tipped to sign new Chelsea deal
Football Insider claims that Gallagher is more than willing to extend his contract at Stamford Bridge as long as he continues to start every game.
According to the source, the midfielder is now “expected” to meet with Chelsea’s upper management to discuss fresh conditions. However, it’s rumored that if they can’t come to an agreement, the Blues will try to offload him next season.
This season, Gallagher has frequently played in midfield alongside Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, despite the fact that the Blues also signed Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu this summer.
Has James Maddison been acquired by Tottenham as the summer’s top acquisition?
James Maddison, who Tottenham may have acquired, might be the summer’s top acquisition.
Lavia, however, has been unable to perform thus far because of an injury. Mauricio Pochettino recently stated that the earliest he should be fit is November.
On the other side, Ugochukwu has so far just accrued momentary minutes. For the foreseeable future, Gallagher is expected to continue to be placed above the duo in the pecking order.
As a result, it is highly likely that Tottenham will have to find Gallagher’s replacement if they decide to strengthen their midfield in January.
