Four controversies during Tottenham vs Liverpool after two red cards and VAR failure
Tottenham ultimately profited from Manchester City’s shocking loss to Wolves on Saturday by defeating Liverpool in the last seconds.
Joel Matip’s own goal in the 96th minute gave the north London team victory over Jurgen Klopp’s team for the first time since 2017. Son Heung-Min had given Ange Postecoglou’s team a lead in the first half as they appeared to be playing with renewed confidence and attacking zeal, but Cody Gakpo equalized just before halftime.
That, though, only begins to tell the tale of a match that will be discussed by analysts and supporters for some time to come, and perhaps not for the best of reasons. Jurgen Klopp in particular was furious after several extremely contentious incidents went against him.
Jones goes over the ball – and off the pitch
After 26 minutes, Yves Bissouma was fouled by Curtis Jones, who was given a penalty for the infraction because it appeared that his studs crossed the ball and made contact with the Tottenham player’s ankle.
After VAR intervention, referee Simon Hooper decided to show red after initially choosing not to. Gary Neville, who was commentating live on Sky Sports, was not impressed: “He’s [the VAR] showing him the finish motion and that’s not how it truly is – his foot slips over the top of the ball. It’s never a red card, and he will receive one if doing so will endanger the game, the referee added.

“I think generally, he’s gone in genuinely but his foot slips on top of the ball. I’m not sure, I never am nowadays, I’m less sure about football than I ever have been but I don’t think he’s gone in with any malice.”

Diaz was denied due to a VAR error.
Luis Diaz believed he had given Liverpool the lead after latching onto Mohamed Salah’s assist to score despite having 10 men on the field.
However, an offside flag was raised, and a quick VAR assessment appeared to confirm—or not—that the attacker had just strayed past the final defender. After the final whistle, the PGMOL made an embarrassing disclosure that seemed to contradict the judgment.
“PGMOL acknowledges significant human error occurred during the first-half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool. The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed by the on-field team of match officials,” a statement read. That was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene. ”

Jota’s quickfire cautions
Destiny Udogie suffered two fouls in short succession, received two cautions, and was involved in two situations where it was not obvious whether actual contact occurred.
Diogo Jota appears to have accidentally clipped Udogie during the first caution as he attempted to make a supporting run upfield. While the Portuguese star’s second tumble was clearly hasty, it wasn’t precisely a case of gross bodily harm.
Jamie Redknapp, a Sky pundit, stated of the second foul, “Once you’ve already been booked, you cannot do that, you cannot lunge into tackles as you know you’re going to cost your team.” “Don’t dive into tackles, whether there is a touch or not,” was the instruction.

Klopp rages at “crazy” calls
Klopp would have done well to pick his remarks carefully after the last match between these clubs given the penalties that followed his shenanigans.
He barely made it within the rules, but he wasn’t exactly kind to the referees either: “The first red card – Curtis steps his foot on the ball, rolls over the ball, and smashes the leg. So, if you view that in slow motion, you might conclude that it was unfortunate to receive a red card.
“First caution for Jota is never a caution. That is absurd. the offside objective? I noticed that was not offside while on the field. The first thing I learn at halftime is that the lines were drawn incorrectly. The user of a smartphone, whether it is Instagram,
