The five biggest hidings the Springboks have ever dished out
Here we look at the five biggest wins by the Springboks in Test rugby.
5. 83 (96–13) WALES LOFTUS VERSFELD STADIUM, PRETORIA 1998
In 1998, Wales sent a young team on a tour of South Africa, and they paid the price with the greatest defeat a Springboks team had ever suffered.
Rassie Erasmus, the current Rugby Director, scored the first of the Springboks’ 15 tries that evening.
Percy Montgomery finished with a personal point total of 31 after kicking nine conversions, one penalty, and two tries in addition to Pieter Rossouw’s hat-trick.
4. 87 (87–0) NAMIBIA NORTH HARBOUR STADIUM, AUCKLAND 2011
At the 2011 Rugby World Cup, the Springboks had no intention of being good neighbors to Namibia, as they defeated them and scored 87 points.
In this game, Bryan Habana notably surpassed all previous try scorers for the Springboks.
Each of Morne Steyn and Ruan Pienaar converted six tries, with the latter also kicking a penalty goal.
3. 92 (105–13) NAMIBIA NEWLANDS STADIUM, CAPE TOWN 2007
The Boks’ thumping of Namibia in a rare bilateral Test match between the neighbors was worse than what happened in North Harbour.
For the first and only occasion in South African Test rugby history, two Springbok forwards scored hat tricks in the same game.
In a display of Springbok strength that Namibia wouldn’t soon forget, Schalk Burger and Juan Smith each scored three goals.
2. 101 (101–0) ITALY KINGS PARK STADIUM, DURBAN 1999
A year after Wales was destroyed, a helpless Italian squad was used as bait in the shark tank in Durban.
This game felt like a continuation of the Springboks’ 74-3 thumping of Italy the week prior at Boet Erasmus. The five tries that Stefan Terblanche scored in one game set a South African record at the time.
The Springboks’ victory was their biggest in six years.
1. 131 (134–3) URUGUAY BUFFALO CITY STADIUM, EAST LONDON 2005
A new record was established in 2005 when the Springboks thrashed Uruguay in East London.
In a great start for the Springboks, Tonderai Chavhanga scored six tries, setting records for the most tries scored on a debut and the most tries scored by any Bok in a Test match.
Twelve different players crossed the goal line for the Springboks in their 21 tries.
