Atletico Madrid revives loan interest in Tottenham midfielder amid high interest from EPL giants
In order to secure a loan with a buy-back clause for Tottenham midfielder Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, Atletico Madrid has reopened negotiations.
A fee of about £40 million is now being discussed.
In the last days of the transfer window, Manchester United has also been mentioned in connection with a deal for Hojbjerg.
Erik ten Hag is frantically trying to bolster his midfield, so the Red Devils are seeking to do some late business in the window that closes on Friday.
Hojbjerg hasn’t been the top candidate on United’s wishlist, but he might make a late move now that the club has been given the opportunity to begin negotiations, according to the Telegraph.
Under former manager Jose Mourinho, Tottenham acquired the Denmark international in a £20 million transfer from Southampton three years ago.
Ange Postecoglou, the new manager, is willing to let Hojbjerg go along with a number of other first-team starters, including Eric Dier of England.
The 28-year-old was initially expected to sign with Atletico Madrid after talks between the two teams were initiated, but those talks ultimately fell through.
Hojbjerg chose to stay in European football despite interest from Saudi Arabia, which frequently recruits Premier League players.
Hojbjerg has had difficulty accruing playing time thus far this season since Spurs manager Postecoglou prefers a midfield three consisting of Yves Bissouma, James Maddison, and Pape Sarr.
Hojbjerg started Tuesday’s Carabao Cup match against Fulham, which Tottenham lost on penalties, although he has only made two substitute appearances in the Premier League this year.
