Manchester City reject Real Madrid, Chelsea enquiries for 29-year-old key defender – report

Real Madrid’s search for defensive reinforcements has seen the club assess a number of Europe’s most accomplished centre-backs, with several elite names emerging as potential targets ahead of the new season. Among those linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabéu are Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck and Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol, both of whom have attracted admiration for their composure, versatility and ability to play in possession.

However, another defender who has been firmly on Real Madrid’s shortlist is Manchester City’s commanding centre-back Ruben Dias. The Portuguese international has built a reputation as one of the finest defenders in European football since arriving in England and continues to be regarded as a player capable of transforming any backline.

According to reports from England, as relayed by ESPN, Manchester City have firmly rejected enquiries from Real Madrid as well as several other leading European clubs regarding Dias’ availability during the current transfer window. Despite growing interest from across the continent, City have made it abundantly clear that the defender is not available for transfer under any circumstances this summer.

The report claims that Real Madrid are not the only Spanish giants to admire Dias. Fierce rivals Barcelona are also understood to be long-term admirers of the Portugal international, while Premier League heavyweights Chelsea have likewise explored the possibility of bringing him to Stamford Bridge.

All three clubs are believed to have contacted Manchester City to establish whether there was any opportunity to negotiate a deal and to understand the financial conditions that might make a transfer possible. Nevertheless, each enquiry reportedly received exactly the same response from the Etihad hierarchy.

Manchester City have informed every interested club that Ruben Dias is considered untouchable and remains a fundamental part of Pep Guardiola’s plans. The club have no intention of entertaining offers, regardless of the stature of the interested sides or the potential transfer fee that could be proposed.

Dias joined Manchester City from Benfica in 2020 and immediately established himself as one of the Premier League’s premier defenders. His leadership, defensive intelligence and commanding presence played a crucial role in City’s domestic and European successes, helping the club win multiple Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. Over the years, he has become one of the dressing room’s most influential figures and a cornerstone of Guardiola’s defensive structure.

The Portuguese defender is also under long-term contract until 2029, placing Manchester City in a particularly strong negotiating position. With no pressure to sell and Dias remaining central to the club’s ambitions both domestically and in Europe, City have little reason to consider any offers, making their firm stance entirely unsurprising.

Having failed to make any progress in their pursuit of Dias, Real Madrid are now understood to have redirected their attention elsewhere. Reports indicate that the Spanish giants have made Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni their primary defensive target as they continue planning for the future of their backline.

The Italian international has developed into one of Serie A’s standout defenders and is viewed by Real Madrid’s recruitment team as an ideal addition thanks to his composure on the ball, tactical awareness and ability to operate in a possession-based system. Club officials reportedly believe Bastoni possesses the qualities needed to strengthen the defence for years to come.

Inter Milan, however, are expected to demand a significant transfer fee for one of their most valuable players. Current estimates suggest that securing Bastoni’s signature could cost Real Madrid in the region of €60 million, reflecting both his importance to the Italian champions and his status among Europe’s elite centre-backs.

Before launching a formal move, though, Real Madrid are expected to prioritise player departures in order to create space within the squad and balance their finances. Once those exits are completed, the club are likely to intensify their pursuit of Bastoni, having accepted that prising Ruben Dias away from Manchester City is not a realistic possibility during this transfer window.
