Boks to lose Rassie?

According to reports, the Bok boss already has at least two other offers on the table as his current deal with SA Rugby runs only until the 2027 World Cup in Australia.

While that tournament is still two years away, negotiations are considered urgent given Erasmus’ global reputation and the strong interest from overseas.

SA Rugby is understood to want Erasmus to focus on the Rugby Championship for now, with talks expected to intensify between October and November, once the competition wraps up and before the end-of-year tour.

According to Rapport, a key sticking point is that Erasmus doesn’t just want his own contract extended until after the 2031 World Cup in the USA, but also those of his entire coaching staff.

The national body reportedly accepts that Erasmus is the leading Test coach in world rugby and is determined to keep him. Since returning to the Bok hot seat in 2018, he has guided the side to two World Cup triumphs and has a 72% win record from 46 Tests.

But interest in his backroom team complicates matters. Assistant coach Tony Brown, for example, has admirers across the globe. The former All Blacks flyhalf was widely tipped to join New Zealand’s coaching setup had Jamie Joseph been appointed head coach instead of Scott Robertson.

The demand for Brown underlines the challenge for SA Rugby: any deal with Erasmus will likely have to include long-term security for his lieutenants.

So much shock for Boks
