Jasper Wiese Suspended for Four Matches Following Red Card Incident

Springbok No. 8 Jasper Wiese has been handed a four-match suspension following a disciplinary hearing held by World Rugby on Tuesday. The decision stems from the red card he received during South Africa’s emphatic 45-0 win over Italy last week. The sanction comes as a significant blow to the Springboks’ forward pack, with Wiese being a crucial figure in their recent dominance.

The suspension means Wiese will be unavailable for the final match of the Castle Lager Incoming Series against Georgia, set to take place this Saturday in Nelspruit. Additionally, he will miss the opening three matches of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, including two Tests against Australia — on 16 August at Ellis Park in Johannesburg and 23 August at DHL Stadium in Cape Town — as well as the first clash against New Zealand in Auckland on 6 September.

However, Wiese will return just in time for the critical back end of the Rugby Championship. He becomes eligible for selection ahead of the second All Blacks encounter in Wellington on 13 September. He will also be available for the remaining fixtures against Argentina, scheduled for 27 September in Durban and 4 October in London.

Wiese’s suspension follows a series of disciplinary crackdowns from World Rugby aimed at ensuring player safety and upholding the integrity of the game. The Springboks will now be forced to adjust their game plan and depth at No. 8 as they prepare for a tough stretch of high-stakes matches.

His absence opens the door for other back-row players to stake their claim in the squad. With the Rugby World Cup 2027 qualification path already underway, every selection and performance will count — and Wiese will need to hit the ground running once he returns to action.
