RG Snyman, Maine Libbok and four other stars Who Could’ve Saved South Africa Left on the Bench

The Springboks may have opened their 2025 season with a win over Italy at Loftus Versfeld, but the performance left more questions than answers. While the scoreboard showed a victory, it was far from convincing — and much of the blame lies with the key names who were either absent or left unused.

Jean Kleyn, a powerful lock who has become a dependable figure in South Africa’s engine room, was ruled out due to injury before the match. His absence was deeply felt as the Boks failed to assert dominant control in the tight exchanges. The lineout wasn’t as clinical, and the physical presence around the rucks lacked its usual sting.

Perhaps even more puzzling was the decision to keep seasoned campaigners like RG Snyman, Faf de Klerk, and Willie le Roux on the bench throughout the 80 minutes. With the Boks lacking direction at times and appearing disconnected in backline moves, the exclusion of Faf’s sharp delivery and Le Roux’s experience as a playmaker became increasingly glaring. Snyman, with his game-breaking runs and imposing presence, could have added serious punch in the final quarter, where the Italians found unexpected momentum.

Then there’s the curious case of Manie Libbok — not even in the matchday squad. While questions have surrounded his consistency, Libbok’s creativity and flair could have given the Bok backline a needed edge. His omission, especially when the attack looked blunt at times, was a missed opportunity.

In short, South Africa’s flat showing wasn’t just about those on the field. The lack of strategic substitutions and the puzzling squad selection were just as responsible. If the Boks want to raise their game in upcoming fixtures, they’ll need to trust their firepower — both on the field and waiting in the wings.
