Springboks’ Historic 1995 RWC Win to Be Celebrated with Live Broadcast of Italy Test

In a special celebration marking 30 years since South Africa’s iconic Rugby World Cup triumph in 1995, the South African Rugby Union (SARU), SuperSport, and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) have reached a landmark broadcast agreement. This historic partnership will ensure that the Springboks’ upcoming Test match against Italy on 12 July will be broadcast live across multiple platforms.

The match, which serves as a tribute to the unforgettable 1995 victory led by Francois Pienaar under the unifying presence of Nelson Mandela, will be shown live on SuperSport, SABC 2, and various SABC Radio stations. This wide-reaching broadcast arrangement guarantees that millions of South Africans, regardless of access to pay-TV, can watch the Springboks in action and reflect on one of the most defining moments in the nation’s sporting and political history.

SARU President Mark Alexander emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating, “The 1995 World Cup was more than a rugby victory — it was a symbol of unity and hope for our nation. This broadcast partnership allows us to honour that legacy with all South Africans.”

SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha echoed the sentiment, adding that the match against Italy offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the journey of the Springboks, past and present. “It’s important that we remember where we come from and how far we’ve come,” he said.

The Test match will be played at Kings Park Stadium in Durban, where fans are expected to fill the stands in honour of the 1995 heroes. Pre-match segments will include tributes, archival footage, and interviews with members of the ’95 squad.

This initiative reflects the unifying power of sport — once again bringing South Africans together, 30 years on.
