US Pundits Respond on Wrexham Transfer Plans

Wrexham may be set for a huge summer after sealing promotion to the Championship last weekend.

Saturday evening brought promotion party time to Wrexham for the third year in a row.

Wrexham fans have become used to these celebrations on the STōK Cae Ras pitch, but Saturday was particularly special.

Wrexham beat Charlton Athletic 3-0, securing a place in the Championship with one of the most complete displays of the season.

Phil Parkinson wants to appreciate the moment, but the rise of Wrexham means one question – what next?

Parkinson is dodging transfer talk right now, but Wrexham will be busy in the summer window.

American pundits on Wrexham transfer plans

We already know that Wrexham will be linked with so many players this summer.

Agents will be desperate to secure deals with Wrexham, not just to be part of this wild ride, but also to increase their profiles on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

Wrexham must be careful in terms of signing the right characters, and not just players who want the added exposure.

Wrexham have become so popular in North America, that it’s easy to wonder whether the club could sign an American or Canadian player.

The commercial opportunities under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are huge in that regard, but one American pundit doesn’t think it will happen this summer.

Former United States international and LA Galaxy striker Herculez Gomez has told ESPN that he doesn’t see any current American international as being a potential Wrexham signing this summer.

Gomez feels that, if McElhenney and Reynolds haven’t taken the plunge for an American player and maximised the marketing aspect of a deal, then they’re not going to now.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Kasey Keller agreed, believing that Wrexham don’t need to think about shirt sales in the United States to grow the club.

“I’m going to say no, and this is why I’m going to say no; if the good people of Wrexham, who understand TV, understand marketing, understand how to promote things, didn’t see it fit to have, at any level, an American, I don’t think it’s necessary that they have an American now,” said Gomez.

“To me, it’s not about the token American. To me, it’s about finding the right player, and if that right player happens to be American, no problem,” said Keller.

“I’m not a fan of tokenism at all. Wrexham, clearly, they’ve had success. There’s no issue of thinking ‘hey, will this sell a couple more jerseys in California?’ – no, I think they’re doing it the right way,” he added.

Foreign signings would not surprise us this summer

Gomez and Keller certainly have points here.

McElhenney and Reynolds have largely taken a back seat in terms of football decisions, leaving those up to the experts.

Wrexham won’t just sign an American player for the sake of it, even if the commercial possibilities are huge.

Wrexham will just focus on the right players, and we would not be surprised to see some foreign imports this summer.

Despite Reynolds’ previous excitement about potentially signing players from Uruguay, Wrexham are yet to dip into the foreign markets since the 2021 takeover.

Championship clubs are regularly shopping abroad, though, and the Wrexham rise has become big news on an international scale.

Players all over the world will be wanting to sign for Wrexham and exploring markets abroad could be increasingly appealing as the club goes through the leagues.
