BREAKING NEWS: Jamie Carragher Blasts Liverpool After What He Saw Against Nottingham Forest, Aims Transfer Message at FSG
January 14, 2025 – Liverpool, UK
Former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has launched a scathing critique of his old club after their disappointing 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Sunday, urging the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), to back manager Jürgen Klopp in the transfer market if they are to have any hopes of returning to the Premier League’s elite.
Speaking on Sky Sports immediately following the game, Carragher didn’t hold back, expressing his frustration over Liverpool’s underperformance and suggesting that the team was in dire need of reinforcements if they were to bridge the gap to their rivals.
“I’m absolutely furious with what I’ve just witnessed,” Carragher began. “Nottingham Forest came to Anfield and outplayed Liverpool in key areas of the pitch. This wasn’t just a bad result; this was a disgrace. The lack of intensity, the lack of fight, it’s simply not acceptable for a club like Liverpool. They have the squad, they have the talent, but something is seriously wrong.”
Liverpool’s loss to Forest came at a crucial point in the season, with the Reds sitting in 5th place in the Premier League, eight points adrift of the top four. The defeat was compounded by defensive lapses and an uninspired attacking display, leaving fans and pundits alike questioning the club’s current standing in English football.
Carragher was particularly critical of the team’s midfield, which he felt lacked creativity and control. Despite the presence of key players like Thiago Alcântara and Fabinho, Liverpool was overrun by Forest’s compact and organized midfield, with the visitors creating chances at will. Carragher pointed out that the Reds had not adequately replaced the void left by Georginio Wijnaldum’s departure and James Milner’s aging legs, and that it was becoming clear that the squad was not up to the task of competing at the highest level.
“The midfield is the heart of this team, and it’s been weak for months now. Fabinho looks like a shadow of the player he once was, and Thiago can’t carry the entire load on his own,” Carragher continued. “Liverpool need new blood in that area. They’ve got to be bold in the transfer market. The owners need to step up.”
Carragher, who spent his entire playing career at Liverpool, pointed directly to the club’s owners, FSG, calling on them to invest heavily in the squad during the January transfer window. He referenced the success of rivals like Manchester City and Arsenal, who have consistently bolstered their squads with quality additions, while Liverpool has struggled to land top targets in recent windows.
“Jürgen Klopp is one of the best managers in the world, but he can only do so much with the players he’s got. FSG needs to stop being complacent and make a statement. Go out and get the players Klopp needs to compete. If you want to challenge for the title again, you can’t keep relying on the same players who were at their peak three or four years ago,” Carragher said.
The loss to Forest has left Liverpool fans frustrated and disillusioned, with many calling for immediate action from the club’s ownership. Klopp, who was visibly disappointed in the post-match press conference, hinted at the need for changes in the squad, acknowledging that the team had lost its rhythm and lacked the cutting edge it once had.
As the January transfer window remains open, all eyes will be on FSG to see if they heed Carragher’s warning and back Klopp with the reinforcements necessary to revive Liverpool’s season. With the Reds facing an uphill battle to secure Champions League football for next year, the pressure is mounting for a response.
