Ligue 1’s social media team responded to Cristiano Ronaldo through the league’s official account following his recent controversial remarks.

After a tense departure from Manchester United in 2022, Ronaldo surprised the football world by signing with Al-Nassr, becoming the first major star to join the Saudi Pro League.

This move sparked a wave of talent heading to the Gulf region, with players like Karim Benzema, Neymar, and Sadio Mané following suit.

At 39 years old, Ronaldo has yet to win a league title since his high-profile transfer. Earlier this year, he claimed that his lack of success reflects the competitiveness of the Saudi league compared to leagues like France’s Ligue 1.

During the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai on Friday, where he was named Best Middle East Player, Ronaldo reiterated his stance and criticized Ligue 1, stating, “The Saudi League is better than Ligue 1, of course.”

The 39-year-old attributed the intense heat in Saudi Arabia as one reason why the Gulf state’s league surpasses Ligue 1. In response, Ligue 1’s X account shared a photo of Lionel Messi celebrating his World Cup victory in Qatar’s heat while representing PSG at the club level.

Ronaldo stated that France’s Ligue 1 is dominated solely by PSG, claiming the rest of the league is no longer competitive. He emphasized the challenge of competing in Saudi Arabia’s extreme temperatures of 38–40 degrees and suggested that becoming a champion there is much harder due to strong rivals like Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad.Ronaldo expressed confidence in eventually winning the league, saying, “I’ve been a champion everywhere I’ve played, and I believe I will be a champion here too.” He also highlighted his achievements in goals and assists, crediting his consistency for earning him a recent award. His remarks sparked widespread backlash online, prompting a witty response from Ligue 1’s Spanish-language X account. On Saturday, they posted a photo of Ronaldo’s long-time rival, Lionel Messi, celebrating his 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar, accompanied by the caption: “Leo Messi playing in 38 degrees.”

The account further highlighted Messi’s two successful seasons at PSG, during which he won consecutive Ligue 1 titles, and shared a quote where Messi praised the league’s quality during his time in France.

Messi previously hailed the quality on display in Ligue 1 during his time with Les Parisiens

“Ligue 1 is a much more physical league than La Liga,” Messi remarked about the French top tier. “The teams are more physical, the matches are challenging, and they allow very little space. The players are extremely strong.”

PSG have dominated Ligue 1, winning eight of the last ten seasons, with only Monaco (2016/17) and Lille (2020/21) breaking their streak. Similarly, Saudi club Al-Hilal has enjoyed success in their domestic league, claiming six titles over the past decade.
