Inter Miami chase La Liga star to bolster attack alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez

Javier Mascherano has his eyes set on new attacking talent to help support the current goalscoring duo of Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi.

Inter Miami have just sold striker Leo Campana to the New England Revolution for a record domestic fee and the club is short of further attacking options.

Ghanaian youngster Michael Approach was signed through the MLS SuperDraft but it is unlikely that he will be thrown into the deep end this season.

With no other striking options in the squad outside of Suarez, the attacking roles are certainly there to be filled by the Herons before the start of the season.

Tadeo Allende on Inter Miami radar

While Inter Miami has been linked with a host of strikers in recent weeks the club are yet to bring any new faces to Chase Stadium.

Argentinian Paulo Dybala has been rumored with the Herons and his Roma contract does end this summer, his manager Claudio Ranieri has also explained how he would not stand in the way of the 31-year-old if he wanted to leave.

It remains unclear if Dybala is a possibility but it seems Celta Vigo striker Tadeo Allende is very much a viable option.

The 25-year-old attacker is said to be out of the Spanish club’s plans this season and is expected to leave according to Diario AS.

Allende has played just 10 times for the club since joining from Argentinian side Godoy Cruz in January 2024, in that time he has contributed just one goal and could be looking for a fresh challenge.

The Argentine is versatile and can play as a winger or through the middle, something which could prove helpful for an Inter Miami attack that lacks depth.

Mascherano faces competition for the signature however with Granada, Zaragoza and several Brazilian clubs reported to also be keen on Allende.

Inter Miami relied on Suarez and Messi goals

While it is perhaps not surprising that Suarez and Lionel Messi were Inter Miami’s joint top-goalscorers last season with 20 MLS goals each it does point to a wider issue behind them.

Inter Miami’s second top scorer was the departer Leo Campana and he only had eight MLS goals, beyond that the numbers dropped off quickly.

Here’s a look at Inter Miami’s top MLS scorers last season:

  • Lionel Messi – 20
  • Luis Suarez – 20
  • Leo Campana – 8
  • Robert Taylor – 5
  • Jordi Alba, Benjamin Cremaschi, Matias Rojas – 4

It’s clear to see that if Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are missing games the scoring options become rather limited. Bringing in Allende who scored 10 goals in 2023 would fill the void left by Campana and complement the South American and La Liga vibes the team has already built.

The Herons first begin their pre-season campaign on January 18, 2025, against Club America. Trying to get new faces bedded in before these crucial games is important.
