There are just a few months to go before the new MLS season kicks off and Inter Miami look to banish last season’s ghosts.

The Herons were flying high in the regular season as they finished top of the Eastern Conference, yet their season came crashing down against a tough Atlanta United side in the playoffs.

Inter Miami’s playoff exit was labelled as a huge ‘failure’, and the club’s hierarchy has looked to freshen up the feel of the side by bringing in new manager Javier Mascherano.

Despite a new manager, the club has made very few signings, despite being linked with some of the world’s best talents. The club are trying to sign some top-quality defenders and former Barcelona star Marc Bartra has been heavily linked with a move to Inter Miami.

While the club remains interested in a number of players they appear to have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of one former Manchester United star.

Marcos Rojo likely to sign new Boca Juniors deal

Mascherano was known for his no-nonsense tough style of play so it makes perfect sense why he is looking to bring in Boca Juniors defender Marcos Rojo.

Rojo is an experienced defender at both domestic and international level and played Premier League football with Manchester United for seven years, he’s also amassed over 60 international caps for Argentina.

Rojo has spent the last three years with the Argentinian side Boca where he has won one Primera División, one Copa Argentina as well as a Copa de la Liga Profesional and the Supercopa Argentina.

Despite Mascherano’s interest in the versatile defender, it appears that he could be set to sign a new contract with his current club, according to Pasion Futbol.

Rojo’s contract was due to run out in 2025 but a new deal may see Inter Miami return to different targets.

Inter Miami need reinforcements

Despite already boasting the talents of Messi, Suarez, Sergio Busquets and others the Inter Miami squad could do with a bit of a bolster.

Mascherano’s only incomings have been from the MLS SuperDraft. The Herons signed midfielder Bailey Sparks and striker Michael Appiah.

One area of real concern is in goal with Drake Callender being the only clear number one option, CJ dos Santos left Chase Stadium to join new MLS side San Deigo FC.

While club management is new to Mascherano he will need to get down to work quickly and bring in some new faces before the season begins.

Inter Miami opens the new MLS season by hosting New York City FC on February 22nd.
