Nuno’s tirade against Cup replays is dismissed by Blackpool, as the manager of Nottingham Forest becomes the latest Premier League executive to advocate against extra games: Hard!
There seems to be a conflict over the FA Cup’s future between idealists and realists, and it was difficult to support Blackpool manager Neil Critchley’s team when they were awarded another chance at a third-round surprise.
Replays should be eliminated, according to Premier League managers Nuno Espirito Santo, the boss of Nottingham Forest. Critchley, a former Liverpool player and Steven Gerrard’s temporary assistant at Aston Villa, presented a strong argument for one of the Cup’s finest traditions.
Blackpool and Forest will meet again at Bloomfield Road next week, but Nuno believes the matter should have been decided here and now.
‘Everyone is aware of the fixture congestion,’ he said. ‘Finish the game on the day, whether that means extra time, penalties, whatever. Allow the players more time to recover.’
Sadly, Nuno and his allies will most likely prevail in this battle.He has Michael Arteta, Pep Guardiola, and Jurgen Klopp on his side. The wealthy and powerful typically get what they desire.
Replays from the fifth round onward are currently nonexistent. Everything else has been supplanted by the Premier League and Champions League to the point that it will likely be a miracle if we have any domestic tournaments left in a few decades.
But consider this stirring response from Critchley, who made a mockery of the whingeing from clubs whose resources he can only dream of.
‘Tough,’ he said when asked about their complaints. ‘This was our 35th game of the season. Premier League clubs get international breaks and time off in other parts of the season. We don’t. Replays are part of the magic.

‘Ideally nobody wants a replay — I am sure Forest don’t — but we are competitive animals. These moments don’t last long and you don’t get many chances to create memories. There is something magical about this competition.

Gonzalo Montiel, the defender for Forest, would have been grateful to Blackpool had they prevailed. With possibly the best player to have ever played the sport, he has scaled football’s highest height, but nothing brings you back to earth like the FA Cup.
In the 2022 World Cup final, Montiel assisted Lionel Messi in capturing the trophy for the first time by scoring the game-winning penalty in the shootout against France. In the Europa League final against Roma last summer, he scored the same goal from the spot to secure Sevilla’s triumph.
But in this instance, his mistakes gave Blackpool a chance thanks to two marginally less well-known players, Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel and Albie Morgan of progressing to round four.
This was definitely a feather in their cap, despite the fact that they were unable to hold on.
With victories over Newcastle and Manchester United in their previous two games, Forest is currently ranked 15th in the Premier League. Santo assembled a formidable squad that most likely could have defeated a third-tier team.
Nuno said, “The important thing is that we have a chance to put it right. The first half was bad and we conceded too easily.”
By the time they reach Bloomfield Road, Forest ought to be aware of the result of a far bigger conflict. Half an hour before the break, Montiel partially made up for it as teammate Argentine Dominguez headed a powerful cross goal downward, setting up Forest’s opening goal.
Chris Wood should have squared things just before the interval, but he guided wide from Morgan Gibbs-White’s excellent pass, and not long after the restart Dominguez came close to his second when he headed Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross just over.
But in the 56th minute, Gibbs-White gave Forest a point to remember when he collected Hudson-Odoi’s ball and fired a beautiful goal into the upper corner from 20 yards out.
While Blackpool grew weary, Forest was settling into a rhythm. Daniel Grimshaw, the goalkeeper, was powerless to stop the goals, but he made an incredible point-blank save to deny Ryan Yates the chance to finish the comeback with a header from Danilo’s cross.
In stoppage time, Kyle Joseph, a replacement, created shooting space for Blackpool, but he attempted a pass instead of winning the match. And they almost lost it when Wood, sliding in at the far post, was just inches away from sealing the victory after Hudson-Odoi guided the ball across goal.
