Cheslin Kolbe says the Springboks’ youthful backline showed against the All Blacks in Wellington on Saturday that they “mean business”.

The winger scored two of the Boks’ six tries in a 43-10 demolition of the All Blacks – South Africa’s biggest win in the rivalry – and praised the composure of his new-look teammates.
“Immensely proud! Obviously when the team was announced with a young backline and me being one of the older guys, I think it’s just a lot of positive energy and guys who show they mean business and that they also want to fight for a position in the team,” said Kolbe.
One thing about this squad, whoever gets an opportunity, we back him 100% and just make sure that whenever they go into big games like this, they’re confident in themselves.
“What the young guys and the whole backline did [on Saturday] was unbelievable. I think we just need to keep our feet on the ground and just continue to work. I think we can still rectify a few issues and be better as a team.”
The 44-Test flyer admitted the victory was even more significant after the narrow loss at Eden Park a week earlier.
“Obviously we would’ve wanted to win last week, but God had different plans. It was a special night for us [in Wellington] and to take the Freedom Cup back to South Africa – it’s special. It means a lot to us as a team and as a country.
“I think we owed ourselves a big performance and everyone just did their best and sacrificed for the team.”
Looking ahead, Kolbe urged the Boks to stay grounded as they chase back-to-back Rugby Championship titles.
“The hopes are there, but we just need to take it training by training, game by game and just remain humble and continue to put in the hard work.”
He also expects a fierce challenge against Argentina at Kings Park and Twickenham.
“Argentina’s playing great rugby and it’s always a physical battle against them. Test rugby is all about being disciplined, being clinical and playing on the right side of the field. I’m sure it’s going to be a good challenge against them.”
