Good news for Sooner Nation: Patty Gasso finally gives update on Sophia Bordi’s return

The biggest mystery of Oklahoma softball’s offseason hasn’t involved Transfer Portal moves, but the status of pitcher Sophia Bordi.
OU head coach Patty Gasso finally revealed on the “Plank Show” on Friday morning that she expects Bordi to return to the Sooners for the 2026 season after missing last season for personal reasons.
Yes, we are,” Gasso answered when asked if OU expects Bordi back next year.
Gasso expects Sophia Bordi to return
Bordi was the No. 1 pitcher in the 2026 class, but then reclassified to 2025 to start her college career early. Even after reclassifying, Bordi still signed as a top-5 pitcher from the 2025 class last year. She was a two-time New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year.
There were already expectations for Bordi to redshirt in 2025, but it was eventually realized during the season that she hadn’t been around the program at all.
“She’s not here on campus,” Gasso said when asked during a weekly press conference. “She went back home, and that’s something that I don’t have the privilege to talk about. It’s more of a personal situation. So, she did not finish the season out with us.”
As speculation and rumors swirled after that news broke, Bordi then released her own statement.
“With all of the articles and rumors coming out,” Bordi wrote on social media. “I thought I would address this situation myself. First, I appreciate Coach Gasso for keeping my information private. I made the decision myself to step away from school and softball for the rest of the season because I needed to take time to work on my personal/mental health. This was something that I felt needed to be dealt with back home with my family’s support, and also so I wasn’t a distraction to the team in the middle of the season. I appreciate everyone’s concerns but wish that information wasn’t being falsely spread the way it was. With that being said, the season is still going and my girls are still working. I’m always watching and cheering them on no matter what BOOMER!”
There was never any serious worry Bordi wouldn’t return to play softball for the Sooners, but it was definitely a concern, especially as time went on without any confirmation. Bordi did recently post on social media what seemed like a hint for her return, though. She posted a picture of her in an OU uniform with the Bible verse Matthew 11:28, which reads, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (CSB)
