Bulls new coach Name 50% U21 Squad for Currie Cup

Phiwe Nomlomo Leads Bold Young Bulls Squad into Currie Cup with Dynamic Coaching Team

In a bold move that signals both a commitment to youth development and a fresh tactical approach, Phiwe Nomlomo has been named as head coach and defence coach of the Vodacom Bulls for the upcoming Currie Cup campaign. Nomlomo has revealed that 50% of the 38-man squad will consist of under-21 players, highlighting the franchise’s strategy of blending talent and potential as they aim to revitalize their domestic dominance.

🗣️ “It’s a 38-man squad plus all the injuries. However, in that 38 that’s been announced, 50% will be under-21 players,” said Nomlomo, pointing to a development-centric philosophy that aligns with long-term succession planning at Loftus Versfeld.

Joining Nomlomo in this exciting new chapter is a highly specialised coaching unit that brings a mix of playing pedigree and technical sharpness:

  • 👨🏾‍💼 Kennedy Tsimba, one of South Africa’s most gifted rugby brains, brings his experience and tactical depth to the backline setup.
  • 👨🏼‍💼 Werner Kruger, a former Bulls stalwart, will be in charge of scrummaging—a vital area where young props will benefit from his Super Rugby and Springbok experience.
  • 👨🏼‍💼 James Winstanley, known for his analytical attacking frameworks, takes the role of attack coach, aiming to unlock the explosive potential of the youthful backline.
  • 👨🏼‍💼 Josh Strauss, a powerful former Springbok loose forward, will lead the forwards department, tasked with toughening up the next generation of Bulls pack leaders.

This coaching structure, under Nomlomo’s direction, is expected to bring innovation, discipline, and development to the Bulls’ Currie Cup charge. With a significant portion of the team made up of U21 players, the campaign could mark the emergence of the next crop of Bulls and Springbok stars.

As the #BackTheBlue faithful prepare for the season, all eyes will be on how Nomlomo’s youthful squad handles the rigours of senior rugby, and whether their daring strategy can deliver results against more experienced sides.

One thing is clear: the Bulls aren’t just building for the Currie Cup — they’re building for the future.
