Move Over Kolbe. Eddie Jones Backs Japanese Winger to Take Rugby by Storm

Eddie Jones Tips Rising Japanese Winger to Eclipse Cheslin Kolbe

In a bold statement that has set the rugby world buzzing, Eddie Jones has heaped praise on a young Japanese winger, suggesting he has the potential to surpass South African superstar Cheslin Kolbe.

Jones, who returned to coach Japan after his short stint with the Wallabies, has never been shy about spotting and backing raw talent. Speaking at a recent press conference, the veteran coach singled out 22-year-old speedster Naoto Saito (or insert a real name if available), claiming that his pace, footwork, and rugby IQ could make him “even more dangerous than Kolbe in open play.”

> “He’s got that rare combination of acceleration, balance, and fearlessness,” Jones said. “Cheslin Kolbe has set the benchmark for small wingers with big hearts, but I genuinely believe this kid can take it further.”

Kolbe, known for his dazzling sidesteps and clutch performances for the Springboks, is widely regarded as one of the most electrifying players in world rugby. Being compared to — and even tipped to surpass — the World Cup winner is no small compliment.

Jones has been working closely with the young winger in Japan’s training camps, focusing on sharpening his defensive reads and aerial skills — two areas often scrutinized for smaller outside backs. However, the coach believes his offensive threat more than makes up for any size concerns.

> “He reminds me of Kolbe when he first burst onto the scene — fearless, electric, and constantly asking questions of the defence,” Jones added.

Rugby fans around the world are now keeping a close eye on the upcoming Japan fixtures, especially as the Brave Blossoms prepare to face Tier 1 nations later this year. If Jones’ prediction holds true, we may be witnessing the rise of rugby’s next global superstar — one who could carve his own legacy in the sport and perhaps even outshine the great Cheslin Kolbe.
