Barbarians player ratings v Springboks: All Blacks struggle to shine as legend ‘anonymous’ in Cape Town rout

Following a 54-7 defeat to the Springboks in the Qatar Airways Cup at DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday, here are our player ratings for theBarbarians.
The backs
15 Melvyn Jaminet: Struggled to deal with Aphelele Fassi’s kicks in behind early on but grew into the game and fully deserved his try just after the hour mark, never saying die in his carry to the line. 7
14 Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens: Won a breakdown penalty early on and looked a threat whenever he was given an inch. However, those touches were few and far between today as his presence faded. 6
13 Leicester Fainga’anuku: Just couldn’t impose himself on the game, which was a huge shame for the Baa-baas as they desperately needed his customary punch in midfield. 4
12 Peter Umaga-Jensen: Ran hard lines at times, but like Fainga’anuka he was largely starved of possession in the Cape Town rain. 4
11 Mark Tele’a: Showed flashes of his quality but it was not a game for the Barbarians backline as they spent more time under their posts than in the opposition red zone. 5
10 Josh Jacomb: Looked a tad flustered early on and the conditions certainly didn’t help. When he did slice through a hole a wild offload foiled a promising attack. 3
9 Tawera Kerr-Barlow: A player who is good in any weather and in Cape Town today he proved that again to a degree. Solid but hardly spectacular from the Top 14 stalwart. 5
The forwards
8 Shannon Frizell: Like many of his team-mates the All Blacks back-row struggled to bring his A game today. Replaced around the 50-minute mark by Hoskins Sotutu after a quiet outing. 4 7 Sam Cane: The All Blacks legend was anonymous for the Baa-baas and cut a frustrated figure on the bench after being replaced on 47 minutes. 3
6 Peter O’Mahony: A streetwise steal at a Bok driving maul was classic O’Mahony and he became more prominent as the game wore on. Given a rousing reception from those inside DHL Stadium after being replaced on his farewell appearance. 5
5 David Ribbans: Emptied the tank around the field and his second-half try-saver on Cobus Reinach was a thing of beauty. Can be proud of his efforts in his home city. 8
4 Ruben van Heerden: Physical up front and showed some nice touches around the field with a nice offload in the first half. Continued to put in a shift in the second, too. 7
3 Paul Alo-Emile: Part of a front-row that was caught cold in the opening stages and didn’t really have much joy around the field either as Ox Nche got the better of him. 4 2 Camille Chat: Lineout issues hurt the Barbarians in the opening period and there were also troubles at scrum time against the Springboks pack. Was all heart around the field, however. 4
1 Cian Healy: Fired up from the first whistle, but his early charge-down on Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu was in vain after an earlier knock-on. Thereafter, Asenathi Ntlabakanye probably shaded their scrum battle as the Irish prop signs off from rugby with a tough defeat. 4
Replacements: The front-row replacements were an upgrade on the starters in terms of success at scrum time, while Hassane Kolingar was also a solid carrier. Elsewhere, Santiago Arata attempted to up the tempo while Lachlan Boshier clumsily saw yellow for a head-on-head tackle on Kurt-Lee Arendse. 5
