Lions to snap up stormers speedstar

Head coach Ivan van Rooyen is reportedly close to bolstering the Lions backline corps with a Stormers winger and former Vodacom Bulls playmaker.

With Springbok flyer Edwill van der Merwe off to the Sharks, the Lions have moved swiftly to secure former Blitzboks speedster Angelo Davids, according to Rapport.

The 25-year-old Davids, who has made 37 appearances for the Stormers since 2020, is expected to run out in a Lions jumper in the 2025 Currie Cup.

The Lions are also understood to be in advanced talks with flyhalf Chris Smith, currently playing for Oyonnax in France. A reliable goal-kicker, Smith (30) could link up with the Pride for the Currie Cup if the deal is finalised soon.

Van Rooyen has already added Sharks wing Eduan Keyter to his ranks and signed promising schoolboy stars Ethan Adams, Sherwin Buys and David Hayidakis.

A major shake-up in South African rugby is unfolding as the Emirates Lions prepare to bring in a dynamic wing from the DHL Stormers.

Lightning-fast talent in the spotlight

Edwill van der Merwe, a former Western Province and Stormers wing known for his explosive pace, is reported to be the subject of a potential move to Johannesburg. Standing out with his dangerous counter-attacks, van der Merwe has consistently pressed for national recognition. As of May 2024, he became the first South African–based player to cross the 20‑try mark in the United Rugby Championship, underscoring his finish and speed on the wing .

Strengthening the Lions’ backline

The Lions have been on the hunt for a potent replacement since veteran Courtnall Skosan’s move. The addition of van der Merwe would bring a fresh burst of pace and attacking flair to the team. The winger previously joined the Stormers in 2021, following a standout season in the Western Province colours .

Boosting URC ambitions

After a solid 30–23 victory against the Stormers in February 2025, the Lions showed they can challenge stronger sides—especially on their home turf . Van der Merwe’s addition could further enhance the Lions’ attack and offensive structure.

Aiming for Springbok attention

Despite his form, the speedster is still waiting for a Springbok call-up. Known for his explosive breaks, his bold performances in a revamped Lions backline could capture attention from national selectors looking for finishing power .
