Following a disappointing 36-18 defeat to Glasgow Warriors in the United Rugby Championship (URC) quarter-final at Scotstoun on Friday, here are the player ratings for the Stormers.

15 Warrick Gelant: Tried his hardest in a losing cause, attempting some intelligent chip kicks through and winning a breakdown turnover, but Gelant was well shackled. 5

14 Ben Loader: Struggled on both sides of the ball as the Warriors took advantage of some poor defensive reads to make breaks around the outside. 4

13 Suleiman Hartzenberg: Absolutely dreadful defensively as he missed a plethora of tackles and then struggled to get into the game with ball in hand. 4

12 Dan du Plessis: Lasted half-an-hour before injury struck and struggled to make an impact in that time. Tried to make his presence felt on the gain line but Glasgow set the tone early on and were dominant. 5

11 Seabelo Senatla: Some may blame him for the sin bin – and it did prove costly with two tries conceded while he was off the field – but Senatla was the Stormers’ biggest threat. Touched down twice and never stopped working, even when the game was lost, so credit to him for that. 7

Springboks’ big hope falters

10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu: It was all a bit underwhelming from the Springboks’ 2024 breakout star. Started at fly-half before being moved to centre after Manie Libbok came on but, to be honest, he played well in neither. Also tended to overplay his hand due to the team’s struggles which led to more errors in what was a very disappointing display. 4

9 Stefan Ungerer: The ball kept getting stuck at the base as the Stormers struggled to get tempo into the game. Ungerer also failed to organise his forwards and was ultimately indecisive, which was in stark contrast to George Horne and Glasgow. 5

8 Evan Roos: A dreadful start from the talented number eight, who dropped the ball when close to the opposition line and then missed the tackle which resulted in Senatla being sin-binned, even if Roos felt that he was being held. The Springbok then grew into the game, winning a big turnover and carrying hard into contact before those early fallibilities returned with him partly at fault for Kyle Rowe’s second try. 5

7 Marcel Theunissen: Looked to get involved in both attack and defence, but Theunissen didn’t make the impact he would have liked as the Glasgow back-row dominated. 5

6 Paul de Villiers: Beastly at the breakdown, which included winning a huge turnover when his team were under pressure and was perhaps unlucky on a couple more occasions not to be rewarded. 7

Lineout woes

5 Ruben van Heerden: While hooker Andre-Hugo Venter struggled, the locks also have to take their share of the blame and the lineout was a bit of a mess. It wasn’t Van Heerden’s best game as a result. 4

4 Salmaan Moerat (c): Began a brutal counter-ruck which almost resulted in an early turnover, but unfortunately his evening only lasted eight minutes after failing a HIA. N/A

3 Neethling Fouche: A fine scrummaging effort from the tighthead, who was not one of their man culprits defensively. The Stormers’ URC exit was certainly not his fault. 7

2 Andre-Hugo Venter: A bit of a shocker from the hooker unfortunately, whose darts were often awry. He then missed the chance in the second period to give his side some hope by dropping the ball with the line in sight before being replaced straight after. 4

1 Ali Vermaak: Scrummaged really well, putting the Glasgow tightheads under pressure. Loose work was limited but he did his job excellently when on the field. 7

Replacements: A couple of enforced early changes – Libbok and JD Schickerling – struggled to make their presence felt and ultimately could not bring structure to the team. The reserve props were excellent but that was about it. 5
