EPL Admits 13 VAR Errors, Eyes Offside Tech Upgrade
The English Premier League (EPL) has admitted to 13 Video Assistant Referee (VAR) errors in the first 23 rounds of the current season — a drop from 20 in the same period last year. These include four incorrect VAR interventions and nine missed interventions, according to the Key Match Incidents panel.
In response, the league has introduced a six-point plan to improve VAR accuracy, speed, and transparency. A key part of this initiative is the proposed introduction of Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) before the season ends. This system, already used in FIFA and UEFA competitions, is expected to cut offside decision times by 31 seconds.
Chief Football Officer Tony Scholes emphasized recent improvements and expressed hope SAOT could still be adopted this season. However, if the league lacks confidence in the system, its implementation might be delayed until next season.
Additionally, the EPL plans to enhance the fan experience by allowing referees to announce VAR decisions in-stadium starting next season, and is lobbying for expanded VAR communication.
The league also detailed four specific VAR mistakes this season:
Bournemouth vs Newcastle: A goal wrongly disallowed for handball.
West Ham vs Man Utd: An incorrect penalty awarded after VAR review.
Brentford vs Everton: A red card wrongly issued and later overturned.
Nottingham Forest vs Southampton: A legitimate goal wrongly disallowed for offside.
The EPL’s six-point plan aims to:
1. Clarify VAR intervention standards.
2. Reduce delays using SAOT.
3. Improve fan communication.
4. Enhance VAR official training.
5. Increase transparency through real-time updates.
6. Educate fans on VAR processes.
This reflects the EPL’s commitment to maintaining game integrity and improving both fairness and fan engagement.
