Despicable Stormers? Fans Demand Shake-Up as Heyneke Meyer Tipped for Takeover”
The Stormers, once the pride of South African rugby, are now facing an identity crisis — and fans have had enough.
Despite clinching the inaugural United Rugby Championship (URC) title in 2022, the Cape Town-based franchise has struggled to replicate that glory. Two successive quarter-final exits at the hands of Glasgow Warriors — both away and both bruising — have left supporters questioning whether John Dobson’s reign as head coach should come to an end.
From Champions to Chokers?
In 2023, it was a gut-wrenching loss in the URC final on home turf against Munster. Fast-forward to 2024, and the pain continues — another quarter-final defeat, another uninspiring performance, and an 18-point loss (18-36) with a 2-5 try count. Last year wasn’t much better — a 10-27 defeat with only one try on the scoreboard.
Dobson, in the wake of the latest defeat, defended his team’s effort, saying:
“I thought we fought, I couldn’t sit in the change room and complain about the efforts.”
But fans aren’t buying it anymore.
X (Twitter) Reacts: Fans Call for Dobson’s Exit
The social media backlash has been fierce. Here’s a glimpse at the frustration boiling over online:
🗣️ Johan Jordaan:
> “Stormers may hate me for saying this, but you need Heyneke. A little blue juice injection! Remember, he is actually a Stormers supporter before you grab the pitchforks and chainsaws… They need Heyneke, Nienaber and the intervention of the holy spirit to fix the mess. 142 successful Glasgow tackles vs 62 successful Stormers tackles. It is wild.”
🗣️ @LaPoen:
> “Dobson has reached his ceiling, I’m afraid. Stormers have a lightweight tag again, horrible defence and absolutely no grunt in them. It’s time to change.”
🗣️ Brenton Jonker:
> “The excuses are too much. I was rooting for the Stormers, but they have world-class players and just didn’t want to win as badly as Glasgow. It is time for Dobbo to hang up the whistle.”
🗣️ @G-Man5000:
> “Stormers have underperformed for years now. It’s both a coaching problem and the fact that we overrate our talent and depth somewhat. This applies to the Sharks and Bulls too.”
Enter Heyneke Meyer?
With Dobson’s strategies under fire, many are now pointing to former Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer as the man to lead a revival. Known for his hard-nosed approach and pedigree, Meyer’s name is trending among fans desperate for a return to dominance.
Whether Meyer is a realistic option remains to be seen — but the message from fans
is loud and clear: Stormers rugby needs a reset.
