Report: Celtic Defender Wanted by Champions League Side

Celtic centre-back Stephen Welsh has attracted interest from Hungarian champions Ferencvaros and Belgian club KV Mechelen after a strong loan spell in Belgium.
Welsh joined KV Mechelen in January, making 19 appearances and scoring in his final game against FCV Dender. His performances helped Mechelen push for a European spot, and the club now wants to sign him permanently. Welsh has expressed that he enjoyed his time in Belgium, making a return likely.
Ferencvaros, managed by former Celtic striker Robbie Keane, are also keen. The Hungarian side recently won their domestic league and will enter the Champions League qualifiers. Keane, familiar with Celtic’s culture, sees Welsh as a potential asset for European competition.
Welsh remains under contract with Celtic until 2027 and is expected back for pre-season in July. However, with strong defensive options at Celtic—such as Carter-Vickers, Nawrocki, Scales, and Trusty—his chances for regular play are limited. A transfer could suit both club and player.
At 25, Welsh is at a stage where consistent football is crucial. If Celtic receives a good offer, they may be open to a move. For now, interest is high, and a decision is expected this summer.
