🚢 10 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before My First Carnival Cruise

From a Now-Veteran VIFP

Hey Carnival fam! After several cruises, I’ve had my share of rookie mistakes and “why didn’t anyone tell me?” moments. Whether you’re about to sail for the first time or you’re a fellow VIFP looking to refresh your cruise game, here are 10 things I really wish I knew before my first Carnival cruise. Hopefully, this helps make your vacation smoother and even more fun!

1. 🧳 Bring a Carry-On for Embarkation Day

Your checked bags may not reach your cabin until after 4 PM. Pack a small bag with your swimwear, meds, sunscreen, and a change of clothes. That way, you can dive right into the fun without waiting for luggage.

2. 💳 Set Up Sail & Sign Before You Get Onboard

Avoid the Guest Services line on Day 1 by linking your credit card to your Sail & Sign account ahead of time using the Carnival Hub App. If you forget, use the kiosks by Guest Services—they’re faster than waiting at the desk.

3. 🍔 Lido Deck Lunch = Crowded Chaos

From 12 PM to 2 PM, the buffet is jam-packed. Beat the rush by grabbing lunch before 11:30 or after 2:30. Guy’s Burger Joint and the pizza station usually have shorter lines during peak hours too.

4. 📱 Download the HubApp (Works Offline!)

Even without Wi-Fi, the app gives you deck maps, dining times, show schedules, and more. It’s a lifesaver. Download it before you sail so you’re not stuck with slow port internet.

5. 🧼 Be Friendly With Your Room Steward

Your cabin steward can make your cruise 10x better. Introduce yourself early, request extras like pillows or ice, and leave a small tip ($5–$10) upfront. A little kindness goes a long way onboard.

6. 🍽️ Book Shows and Dining Early

Popular dining and entertainment options fill up fast. Use the app or website to make reservations as soon as you’re allowed—even before embarkation if possible.

7. 🏖️ Sea Days = Busy Pools

On sea days, the pools get crowded by 10 AM. Want peace? Go early or swim during dinner when most guests are eating. Port days are quieter on deck too, especially in the adults-only Serenity area.

8. 🧴 Bring Your Own Toiletries

Carnival only provides soap and basic shampoo. If you want conditioner, body wash, or other specific items, bring your own. The ship’s stores have options, but prices are high.

9. 💰 Plan for Gratuities & Extras

Expect about $14–$16 per person per day in auto-charged gratuities. Add in extras like drinks, specialty dining, excursions, and souvenirs—budget smart and avoid surprises at the end of the cruise.

10. 📸 Don’t Skip Formal Night

Even if you’re not into dressing up, the energy and photo ops are worth it. Dining rooms step up their game, and the atmosphere is festive. Snap a few pictures—you’ll be glad you did.

⚠️ Bonus Tips:

Cabin Wi-Fi is slow. Don’t expect to stream much.

Elevators get crowded fast. Stairs are usually quicker (and healthier!).

Carnival excursions are pricier but guaranteed—the ship won’t leave you behind.

Drink packages are only worth it if you drink 6+ alcoholic beverages a day—do the math!
