Saracens legend Kevin Sorrell makes tough career change decision

After 30 years as a player/coach, Kevin Sorrell will leave Saracens once his contract expires at the end of the current season.

Sorrell joined Saracens from Campion School in 1995, just before the game went professional, and made over 300 appearances at centre.

The 48-year-old began his coaching career in 2010 with the Saracens academy before being promoted to senior team backs coach when Andy Farrell left.

While Saracens only won the 1998 Tetley’s Bitter Cup during his playing days, his time as one of director of rugby Mark McCall’s assistants has been littered with success, with three Champions Cup and six Premiership titles delivered.

In a social media post, Sorrell wrote: “It was without doubt the toughest decision to come to, but one I had to make with my head and not my heart. It is impossible to convey the gratitude and the love I have for being associated with this club for the last 30 years in a few sentences. From where I started at Bramley Road to seeing us lift the European Cup was an incredible

journey, a journey that allowed me to play with and work with some of the greatest players to play the game; in the coaching team to work alongside to work alongside some of the sharpest minds in the game and to witness, day in and day out, the diligence of all those not front of house was a privilege.

“Thanks to the Saracens’ ownership, the board, but special thanks must go to the Wray family for the support they have shown to my family and me. The word support is simply insufficient to convey the genuine care and kindness that they invested throughout my time at the club.

“Finally, to the people who have shared my journey the whole way, the supporters, you truly are the heartbeat of this club.

“It was one hell of a ride, but it’s time to find something new to enjoy. Thank you.”
