Bath player ratings: Ben Spencer and Finn Russell’s ‘masterclass’ inspires famous Challenge Cup victory as ‘incredibly lucky’ Sam Underhill stars

Following Bath’s 37-12 victory over Lyon to clinch the Challenge Cup title in Cardiff, here is how we rated Johann van Graan’s charges.

Bath player ratings v Lyon

15 Tom de Glanville: Made some great runs from the back and barely looked bothered by Lyon’s kicking game. Notched up try assist before making way in the final few minutes. 7

14 Joe Cokanasiga: Would have liked to have seen a bit more ball in some space, but when it did come his way, he carried strongly. He covered the backfield well when needed. 6

13 Max Ojomoh: Gave Lyon very little to work with as he made brilliant reads defensively. He took his chance to score superbly and produced several stunning passes. A lethal weapon in Bath’s armoury today, as an England debut looks to be a formality now. 8

12 Will Butt: The perfect foil for Ojomoh and Russell today as he provided the wrecking ball option to the flair and playmaking excellence. He racked up over 60 metres, many of which straight through the Lyon defence. Strong on the other side of the ball too. 7

11 Will Muir: Got his kick chase all wrong as he took Ethan Dumortier out in the air as he tore after his own kick. That earned him 10 minutes in the bin but, outside of that gaffe, he had a strong game in all facets. 5

10 Finn Russell: The value of an experienced half-back pairing in a final was perfectly illustrated today with Russell and Spencer conducting Lyon’s demise. He slammed a stunning 50:22 and continued to kick well throughout the game. He did have the odd gaffe, including a below-average pass five metres out from Lyon’s line, but Dunn saved his blushes shortly after with his try. Flawless from the tee too. A commanding shift. 8

9 Ben Spencer (c): Epitome of a captain’s knock. A glorious pass resulted in Ojomoh’s try which came off the back of an equally impressive 50:22. He also produced a tactical masterclass with his kicking game and was rewarded with a try. 9

Tight five excellence

8 Miles Reid: Arguably the most underrated Bath forward but by no means the least impactful. He was abrasive in all facets of the game in a well-rounded performance before making way for Alfie Barbeary. 7

7 Sam Underhill: Incredibly lucky to play more than half an hour of action after his head-on-head tackle on Davit Niniashvili but, thankfully for Bath, he returned to the field after 10 minutes in the naughty chair. He was brutally effective in contact and at the breakdown, outside of his yellow card, he was sensational. 8

Sam Underhill ‘very, very lucky’ to avoid red for horror tackle in Challenge Cup Final

6 Ted Hill: Landed a hammering hit that denied Lyon a chance of a try before half-time. He would depart early in the second half as Van Graan made use of his powerhouse bench. Yet another quality shift. 7

5 Charlie Ewels: Big and abrasive in all facets of the game and impressed at lineout time. A stalwart of the club and will be smitten with his role in finally getting some silverware. 7

4 Quinn Roux: Played a tidy role in a dominant forward pack. Never one for the flash but simply gets the job done and today was very much the same and just what Bath needed. 6

Front row power

3 Will Stuart: The scrum battle was rather even as the British and Irish Lions tighthead anchored his side of the set-piece. Made a telling carry in the build-up to Ojomoh’s try. Couldn’t have asked for much more and Thomas du Toit built on his work. 7

2 Tom Dunn: Another club stalwart who thoroughly deserves a big celebration tonight. Crashed over the line from close range to get his side’s first try. A perfect record at the set-pieces too. A memorable outing on a memorable night. 8

1 Beno Obano: After the crushing heartbreak of being sent off in the Premiership final last season, the loosehead prop had a far better day in Cardiff. He too grabbed a try, scrummaged well and was excellent in contact. 8

Replacements: Van Graan’s timing was on point with his substitutions with Guy Pepper, Du Toit and Barbeary making immediate and telling impacts when they came onto the pitch. That theme continued with the rest of the bench as Bath’s Bomb Squad thundered the team to a memorable victory. 8
