Steve Schmidt, a former NHRA Pro Stock and Comp racer, passed away at the age of 74. Schmidt secured three NHRA national event Pro Stock titles in the mid-1990s and was also a respected engine builder for various classes. Notably, it was in one of Schmidt’s cars that Pro Stock legend Bob Glidden made some of his last passes .

Bill Shrewsberry, known for his entertaining wheelstanding vehicles like the L.A. Dart and Knott Berry Wagon, passed away at the age of 86 following a prolonged period of declining health. His performances thrilled fans for decades, and he remains a beloved figure in the drag racing community .

Ray Franks, who competed in NHRA’s Pro Stock class for nearly 15 years from 1990 through 2004, has passed away. Although Franks never reached the winner’s circle, he appeared in two final rounds in 1996. He was known for his versatility at drag strips, performing roles from starter to race director, and earned a fair but firm reputation, beloved by racers across the country .

Eric Lane, co-crew chief on Cruz Pedregon’s Snap-on Tools Funny Car, tragically lost his life in a car-pedestrian accident near Mineral Wells, Texas, at the age of 47. Lane joined Pedregon’s team in 2020 and was known for his skill and upbeat personality. Pedregon expressed deep sorrow, stating that Lane’s contributions were instrumental in the team’s success.
Elienisse Zoe Diaz (February 4, 2025)
In a heartbreaking incident, 7-year-old Elienisse Zoe Diaz, a Junior Dragster racer, passed away from injuries sustained during a crash at Orlando Speed World Dragway. Elienisse was making one of her first passes when the tragic event occurred. Her family shared the devastating news on social media, and the racing community has expressed an outpouring of support .
