Phil – Wrexham FC Making Effort to Land Four Premier League Icon Ahead Of Championship season

Wrexham’s historic rise to the Championship was confirmed on Saturday evening when the Hollywood-backed side beat Charlton Athletic to earn promotion out of League One. Just two years ago, the Welsh outfit were competing in the fifth tier of English football, with Wrexham having become the first side to earn three consecutive promotions in the EFL.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were leading the celebrations at the Racecourse Ground following the weekend win, but it won’t be long before attention switches towards preparations for their first season in the second tier since the 1980s.

Ahead of what promises to be a busy summer of comings and goings at Wrexham, Express Sport have picked out four big-name players the Red Dragons could look to sign in the off-season.

Jamie Vardy

It feels like a match made in EFL Championship heaven. The mischievous but evergreen Jamie Vardy rocking up at the Racecourse for Wrexham’s first season back in the division. If only there was a documentary covering all of the shenanigans! After announcing his Leicester City exit, Premier League icon Vardy – who has 143 top-flight goals – hinted he wasn’t planning on hanging up his boots, ramping up the speculation that he could be Wrexham-bound this summer.

Dele Alli

Remember him? Well, Dele Alli is currently living it up in the beautiful Italian town of Como. The only issue for the Englishman is, at least from a football point of view, he’s spent the majority of it on the bench. Dele is contracted to the Serie A side until the summer of 2026, meaning Wrexham would most likely have to splash out on the attacking midfielder, but that’s what Rob and Ryan are for, right?

Jonny Evans

One of the biggest issues facing Wrexham next season will likely be building a squad packed with quality, but also experience. If they’re to remain in the Championship, they’ll probably need players who have been there and done it before. Few have more than Jonny Evans, who is out of contract at Manchester United this summer. They might have some persuading to do, given he’s deep into his thirties, with one eye no doubt on retirement.
