Breaking News:Insider Claims Maple Leafs Have an Extension in Place With $77 Million Forward...

As the 2024-25 NHL season progresses, reports indicate that the Toronto Maple Leafs and veteran forward John Tavares are engaged in ongoing discussions regarding a contract extension. Tavares, who is in the final year of his seven-year, $77 million deal signed in 2018, has expressed a strong desire to remain with his hometown team.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reported that preliminary talks between Tavares’ camp, led by agent Pat Brisson, and the Maple Leafs’ front office have taken place to initiate the negotiation process. LeBrun emphasized that while there is mutual interest in reaching an agreement, both parties are awaiting greater clarity on the NHL’s salary cap projections for the upcoming seasons before advancing discussions.

The NHL salary cap for the current season is set at $88 million, with projections indicating a rise to at least $92.4 million next year. This potential increase could influence the structure and value of Tavares’ next contract.

Given Tavares’ age—he will be entering his age-35 season in 2025-26—and the team’s salary cap considerations, a reduction in salary is anticipated in any new agreement. Discussions have explored various contract structures, including the possibility of deferred payments, to balance Tavares’ compensation with the team’s financial constraints.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli noted that both sides have engaged in productive discussions since training camp, focusing on determining the extent of a potential pay cut for Tavares. Seravalli emphasized that Tavares’ commitment to the Maple Leafs and his established financial earnings suggest a willingness to prioritize team success in the negotiation process.

As the season continues, the Maple Leafs and Tavares are expected to maintain open lines of communication, with the aim of reaching an agreement that aligns with both the player’s career goals and the organization’s long-term objectives.
