‘Kaizer Chiefs want me and this is what they’ve offered’
Kaizer Chiefs
SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has explained why Tashreeq Morris left the club to join Kaizer Chiefs in January.
The 30-year-old joined Matsatsantsa last year but only spent six months with the Tshwane giants before moving over to Naturena. Amakhosi unveiled the striker last week but he did not feature against Orlando Pirates this past weekend due to suspension.
Matthews has revealed why the ex-Cape Town City striker decided to leave the Pretoria side after playing under 15 matches.
“Morris came at the age of 31 and said Kaizer Chiefs want me, and this is what they’ve offered me. And I couldn’t offer him half of what they offered,” said the SuperSport Boss as per FARPost.
“So, should I have a miserable Tashreeq who resents the fact that he could have been somewhere, earning more than double?
“So, you look at the situation and say, okay, how can I benefit the club? How can I benefit the team?,” Matthews added.
SuperSport United CEO not mad that Morris left for Kaizer Chiefs
Matsatsantsa lost Morris but managed to secure a swap deal involving Christian Saile. The Congolese forward has played two matches for SuperSport and scored on his debut.
“So, here’s a 31-year-old who I signed on a short-term contract. Okay, and we’ve got other number 9s like [Samir] Nurkovic and Bradley [Grobler], but I don’t have someone like [Christian] Saile that can go behind [the defence],” Matthews said.
Saile has not been effective at Kaizer Chiefs but Matthews believes the forward can give the team some pace upfront.
“He can get behind the defence, he can break the line, he’s got that added pace which Nurkovic and Bradley do not have. So, for me, I’m going to be practical. Morris, Bradley and Nurkovic together, all three, none of them had pace.”
