90% Done: Tottenham in direct talk with player after reaching agreement with club

Tottenham could make different bid to Man United for Mathys Tel which may give them an advantage

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are among several clubs keen to sign Mathys Tel in the final days of the transfer window.

The Bayern Munich star was adamant that he did not want to leave Germany at the start of the window, but things have changed now.

Tel is ready to find a new club before the winter transfer window shuts, and the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea all want to sign him.

Now, there’s an update on the situation.

Tottenham’s bid for Mathys Tel could be different to Man United’s

Tel is one of the most exciting attackers of his age in the world.

The Frenchman can play through the middle or out wide on the left, and his acceleration, dribbling and ability to finish makes him a great option for many clubs.

Nobody really expected Tel to be available in this window, but the fact that he is now has alerted several big clubs including Spurs and Manchester United.

Tottenham have even held direct talks with Tel’s agents over a move before the transfer window shuts on Monday night.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are so keen to land him that they are even ready to make a permanent bid or an offer to loan him with a clause that would obligate them to sign him on a long-term deal in the summer.

United, on the other hand, are only interested in a loan deal.

That’s according to Ben Jacobs, who said on the Last Word On Spurs podcast: “With Chelsea, the interest is long-standing from last summer, but they’re going to have to convince Tel that he’s going to have a starting place and there’s so much competition in his position at Chelsea.

“Manchester United only want a straight loan. So, if the player decides ‘That’s it, I’m done with Bayern’, they’re not going to take up an obligation. An option maybe, but that doesn’t give the player any security.

“Whereas, I’m told with Tottenham that they would commit to a loan with an obligation or depending on the finances, a straight purchase.

“So, I think Tottenham are looking at Tel for the long term, not just as a stop-gap and I do think that he’s one of the top targets in the final days of the window and he’s available as well.”

Tottenham have another advantage in Mathys Tel

The fact that Tottenham are ready to commit to signing Tel on a long-term deal shows just how serious their interest is.

The Frenchman’s ability to play on the left as well as through the middle makes him the perfect option – not just for now but for the future as well as the heir to Son Heung-min’s throne.

Spurs are right to target Tel, and they may have an edge over other clubs in the race.

Reports have claimed that Tottenham have an advantage in the race to sign Tel because they have built a very strong relationship with Bayern Munich thanks to their deals for Harry Kane and Eric Dier.

That is good news, but it still remains to be seen whether Tel would pick Spurs over other interested clubs in the final days of the window.
