Just In: Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels on His Second Premier League Chance

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels is embracing a new chapter in his Premier League career, after being handed a second opportunity at England’s top level. The 32-year-old Belgian shot-stopper made his first Premier League appearance over half a decade ago with Newcastle United, but after falling out of favor, he made a move to the continent, starring in France with Strasbourg. Now, after a spell abroad, Sels finds himself back in England’s top flight, signing with Forest in the summer of 2024.

“It feels like a dream come true,” said Sels, who has been a standout performer for Forest this season. “The Premier League is where I always wanted to prove myself, and after a few years away, I feel more ready than ever. There’s been a lot of hard work, but I’m enjoying every moment of it.”

Sels’ return to the Premier League has been marked by impressive performances, with his strong shot-stopping abilities and vocal leadership in the box earning him the trust of manager Steve Cooper. In Forest’s recent 1-0 victory over West Ham United, Sels made several key saves, including a point-blank stop late in the match to preserve all three points for his side.

“He’s been fantastic for us,” Cooper commented after the win. “Matz has brought so much experience and confidence to the team. His ability to organize the defense and make those critical saves when we need him most has been invaluable.”

Sels, whose career began with a spell at Belgian side KAA Gent, also gained considerable recognition during his time at Strasbourg in Ligue 1, where he became known as one of the most consistent keepers in France. His return to the Premier League, however, wasn’t without its challenges. Critics questioned whether Sels could handle the increased pressure of England’s top-flight competition after a few seasons away, but the goalkeeper’s performances so far have silenced many of those doubts.

“I know the level is high here, and I’m not taking anything for granted,” said Sels. “But I’ve always believed in myself, and I’ve always loved a challenge. Now, it’s about building on each game and helping the team push up the table.”

Nottingham Forest, currently in mid-table, will look to build momentum as the season progresses, with Sels playing a pivotal role in their pursuit of further Premier League survival and perhaps even a shot at European competition in the years to come.

As for Sels, he’s taking it all in stride, grateful for the second chance and the chance to prove himself on the biggest stage. “Every match is a new opportunity,” he said with a smile. “I’m just focused on making the most of it.”
