Just In: Georgia Women’s Flag Football Team Prepares for Its First Official Season as a Club Team

The University of Georgia is making history this year as the Georgia Women’s Flag Football Team gears up for its inaugural season as an official club team. After years of student-driven interest and intramural competition, the team has been granted full recognition by the university, signaling a new chapter for women’s sports on campus.

“It’s such an exciting time for us,” said team captain Emma Sanders, a junior and one of the founding members of the team. “We’ve been working so hard to get to this point, and it feels amazing to finally have the recognition we deserve. We’re not just a group of friends anymore—we’re a legitimate team with goals, coaches, and the opportunity to compete at a higher level.”

The journey to becoming an official club team has been a long one. The team initially started as an intramural group in 2021, with a handful of dedicated women playing pickup games and working together to refine their skills. What began as casual play quickly turned into something much bigger, as the group attracted more players and caught the attention of local sports organizations and university officials.

“This team has been built on passion,” said head coach Alicia Morales, who was hired in late 2024 to lead the squad. “It’s incredible to see how far they’ve come. I’m proud of the work the women have put in to get to this point. It wasn’t easy, but now we’re ready to take on other schools and show the world what Georgia women’s flag football is all about.”

The Bulldogs will compete in the National Women’s Flag Football League (NWFFL), where they will face off against other club teams from universities across the country. Georgia’s team has already begun practicing, with athletes working on both offensive and defensive strategies to prepare for the season ahead. While the team may be new, the competitive spirit is already palpable.

“We have a lot of raw talent,” said freshman quarterback Lily Nguyen. “We’ve been focusing on building chemistry and learning the fundamentals of flag football. There’s a lot of excitement, and I know we’re ready to compete.”

The support from the university has been overwhelming, with the athletic department providing funding for equipment, uniforms, and travel. The team’s success this season will not only put them on the map in collegiate flag football but could pave the way for the sport’s further growth at other schools.

For now, though, the team is focused on their debut season. “We’re taking it one game at a time,” Sanders said. “But we know we have something special here, and we’re excited to show everyone what we can do.” The future of women’s flag football at Georgia has never looked brighter.
