Player and Manager clash:Controversy blooms as Wrexham AFC exit the FA Cup
Wrexham are out of the FA Cup in the first round after a dismal 1-0 defeat away at League Two side Harrogate Town on Sunday afternoon.
Wrexham were drawn against Harrogate Town in the FA Cup and this always promised to be a tricky encounter.
Harrogate frustrated Wrexham twice last season, first coming from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw before a 0-0 stalemate at the STōK Cae Ras.
This ended up being arguably the most disappointing day of the season so far as Wrexham were beaten 1-0 in Yorkshire.
Jack Muldoon’s first-half goal was enough for Harrogate to claim the win and dump Wrexham out in the first round.
BBC pundit on Wrexham display
Wrexham have previously enjoyed some big third round results, notably beating Coventry City and Shrewsbury Town in recent times.
That won’t be the case this season though as Wrexham served up a poor performance on the road.
Wrexham launched 21 shots in an attempt to break Harrogate down but just five were on target in a poor display.
Target men Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Modou Faal were thrown on and the latter did have the ball in the net, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
This is just a third defeat of the season for Wrexham in all competitions but it particularly stings given that it came against League Two opposition.
Pundit and former Welsh international Kevin Ratcliffe has offered his view on BBC Sport – and he wasn’t impressed.
Speaking in injury time, Ratcliffe suggested that Wrexham simply didn’t look like scoring and had stopped ‘playing football’ late on, simply sending the ball into the box.
That is often how teams approach the game late in the day but Harrogate were able to deal with it fairly comfortably and claim the win.
“There’s still enough time but I’d be very surprised if Wrexham get a goal because for once they don’t look like scoring,” said Ratcliffe. “They’re not playing football, they’re just direct.
Ratcliffe added to BBC Sport that he didn’t feel Wrexham played through Harrogate enough and simply didn’t deserve anything from the game.
Attacking concerns linger for Wrexham
This blank against Harrogate will only leave Wrexham fans concerned about the attacking play right now.
Wrexham fans have pointed to Paul Mullin’s profligacy in front of goal, with the striker still looking a little off-colour.
Phil Parkinson praised Mullin for being ‘back to his best’ in October but he was wayward with his finishing against Harrogate.
Wrexham have become so used to Mullin scoring the goals but it just isn’t going his way right now.
Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher are both out injured right now and Ollie Palmer, for all the great work he does in the final third, isn’t a prolific striker.
New signing Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, by his own admission, isn’t a goalscorer and Modou Faal is a project signing who Wrexham hope to develop.
Somebody needs to step up right now and find the goals; even in the 2-2 draw at Charlton Athletic, the goals came from an own goal and a strike from midfielder Andy Cannon.
Wrexham have the ability to blow teams away but it just isn’t happening right now and Sunday’s defeat will leave Parkinson with plenty to think about in the final third.
