Improve or leave: Rassie Erasmus tasks newbie

Springboks newbie Cameron Hanekom’s emphatic response to Wales eligibility links
New Springboks call-up Cameron Hanekom revealed he never thought of playing for Wales despite qualifying through his grandmother who grew up in the country.
Hanekom was not initially named in the Springboks squad to travel north, much to the frustration of South African fans, but joined up with the squad as a replacement for utility back Damian Willemse.
The 22-year-old has been in blockbuster form for the Bulls since bursting onto the scene last season and is easily an automatic selection for Jake White. However, he has had to wait his turn given the depth the Springboks have in the back-row.
Never considered it
When asked if he considered choosing Wales as his Test nation, the number eight insisted he was never open to the option.
“No, never. I’ve always dreamed of becoming a Springbok and I’ll keep on working as hard as possible to make that dream come true,” Hanekom said.
“I’ve never thought of going to Wales or playing for them.”
The former Junior Springbok has relished linking up with the senior side, which is loaded with veterans and playing legends.
“It’s been an unbelievable experience so far, especially being with double Rugby World Cup winners and players I’ve looked up to for so long, so it’s really a dream come true and something I can’t really describe,” he said.
“I’ve always strived to become a Springbok and although I’m not there yet, it’s just fantastic to be here and to learn as much as I can from these players.”
Versatile
Hanekom runs out in the number eight shirt for the Bulls but thanks to his complete skill set and impressive athleticism he has the ability to play all across the back-row which is gold dust in Rassie Erasmus’ eyes.
“I am versatile when it comes to playing 6,7 or 8. I don’t have a preferred position at the moment, it’s more about just being able to have that mental switch knowing that every position has a different role and being able to just do it to the best of my ability.”
