Behind the Scene: major issues set to cleared after Celtic 7-1 Champions League loss

‘The dressing room is there’: Peter Schmeichel shares what he told his son after Celtic concede seven

Celtic relived a nightmare on Tuesday night that many thought was well and truly behind them after their 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

It wasn’t just the Celtic supporters feeling the pain, but legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was left shell-shocked on the sidelines.

The Treble-winner at Manchester United was present in Dortmund to watch his son – Kasper – in action in such a huge game for Celtic.

But it wasn’t too long before Kasper was giving away a penalty, was in the referee’s book and Dortmund were scoring the first of their seven goals.

In truth, when Daizen Maeda equalised minutes later in what was a frantic opening, it delighted the Celtic faithful and there would have been some belief in the air.

But it was cut short pretty quickly because Karim Adeyemi put Dortmund back ahead pretty much straight away and it was downhill from there for the Bhoys.

Before the match, Peter Schmeichel thanked Brendan Rodgers for signing his son, as well as starting him at Signal Iduna Park.

But like many Celtic supporters, Schmeichel senior wanted the ground to swallow him up because he couldn’t understand what he had just witnessed by the time the full-time whistle blew.

Peter stated that it was a ‘bad, bad day in the office’ and it was ‘difficult’ having to watch his son pick the ball up from the back of the net time and time again.

The 60-year-old shared that he told Kasper after the game to ‘be one of the leaders’ in the dressing room given the dark situation they all find themselves in, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (01/10/24 at 10:15 pm).

What Peter Schmeichel told Kasper after Celtic lost 7-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League

Pre-match: “First of all, thank you for signing him and for playing him today,” Schmeichel senior told Rodgers. “I really begged by producer to (let me) come here and watch the game.”

Then post-match, Kasper’s dad added: “It really is difficult because you always want the best for your children, it doesn’t matter what situation they find themselves in.

“I spoke to Kasper as he came out of the game here, the dressing room is just there, so I spoke to him and I said, ‘This was a bad, bad day at the office. Take it for nothing more, move on, be one of the leaders in the dressing room and help everyone else recover from this’. Don’t forget, Celtic have played really, really good football and there is so much optimism at the club. They need to go through what happened and all that. But this was just a really, really bad day in the office.”

Pressure on Brendan Rodgers

Put aside the Dortmund defeat for a minute, it still doesn’t hide that Celtic have made an outstanding start to the new season.

From the football that has been on show to the way individual players have performed, it has been a joy to watch.

But this is history repeating itself with Rodgers in Europe, Celtic have been here before and so has he, yet nothing has changed.

Rodgers needs to respect the tougher sides away from home in the Champions League, or else, a beating like this is around the corner again.
