Eben Etzebeth Raises Funds for Cornal Hendricks’ Family: “I Just Wanted to Help”

Springbok rugby star Eben Etzebeth has taken the lead in honoring the memory of his former teammate, Cornal Hendricks, by launching a heartfelt fundraising initiative to support Hendricks’ family following his sudden passing.

Hendricks, who was 37, tragically died from a heart attack on May 14, 2025. A former Springbok winger known for his speed and resilience, Hendricks left an indelible mark on South African rugby, both on and off the field.

In a touching tribute, Etzebeth and his Sharks teammates honored Hendricks during a recent United Rugby Championship match by warming up in special jerseys bearing the number 14—Hendricks’ iconic jersey number. These jerseys will be auctioned off, with all proceeds going to support his family.

Speaking about the initiative, Etzebeth said, “It was just a thought that came to me last night. I played with Cornal for a couple of years at the Boks. He was an unbelievable person—on and off the field. I just wanted to help.”

The rugby community has rallied in mourning and support. The Bulls invited fans to lay flowers and tributes at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, and the Stormers held a moment of silence before their game against Cardiff.

Etzebeth’s efforts highlight the deep sense of brotherhood in the rugby world. His initiative not only pays tribute to Hendricks’ legacy as a passionate athlete and beloved teammate but also provides meaningful support to the family he leaves behind. Through this act of kindness, Etzebeth reinforces the enduring spirit of unity that defines South African rugby.
