Arsene Wenger heartfelt message to Southgate

Arsene Wenger regrets what he told Gareth Southgate after Euro 2024 final

Gareth Southgate stepped down as England manager in the wake of their 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024, a decision which saddened former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger wishes that he gave Gareth Southgate some advice.

Arsene Wenger admits that he wishes he’d told Gareth Southgate not to resign within 48 hours of England’s Euro 2024 final defeat.

The Three Lions suffered a crushing 2-1 defeat to Spain last month, prompting Southgate to turn down the offer of a new contract with the FA and leave his position after nearly eight years. Ex-Arsenal boss Wenger was in Berlin to witness Southgate’s final bow and spoke to the 53-year-old after full-time – but forgot to impart one bit of advice.

“I saw him just after the final and I forgot to tell him, ‘don’t make a quick decision’, because when you lose such a big final, you always think in the next 48 hours you will resign,” Wenger told the Daily Mail. “So that’s the only regret I have. But after that you have to sign a competent guy who can continue to do the job he did.”

The Frenchman, who’s now FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, went on to warn the FA that replacing Southgate will be an almighty task. “Well, this team is like a hundred-metre runner who is one yard away from winning it,” Wenger explained.

“Overall, what you want is for them to gain the last yard. Maybe somebody with experience, good creditability with the players. The England squad are very close to win.

“They have the qualities, so you have to support them for the next World Cup. It’s coming very soon and overall, I must say Southgate did a great job and he has built a team that confidence again, quality.”

England under-21 boss Lee Carsley is expected to take charge of the Three Lions’ next two fixtures in September. England face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin and then Finland at Wembley in the Nations League.

FA CEO Mark Bullingham hinted at that strategy when making a statement following Southgate’s resignation. “Our Uefa Nations League campaign starts in September, and we have an interim solution in place if it is needed,” Bullingham said. “We know there will be inevitable speculation, but we won’t be commenting further on our process until we appoint.”

As for the permanent job, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel have been linked.
