Following a close vote, a club legend was elected to the Port Adelaide board.
Warren Tredrea has defeated another ex-player, Bruce Abernethy, for a position on the club’s board.
Warren Tredrea has been elected to the Port Adelaide board of directors, nearly a year after declaring Ken Hinkley’s position untenable.
The Power great, who led the club to its sole AFL victory in 2004, challenged another former player, Bruce Abernethy, for the empty seat on the board for a three-year tenure.
The decorated ex-players competed for the member-elected board slot.
Tredrea won by 199 votes, out of 10,405 cast.
Tredrea voiced concern in April that Hinkley would not be awarded a contract to continue as coach after Port opened the 2023 season with a win followed by successive losses.
“I cannot see it. If he does, I will be the first to say congratulations. He told The Big Deal podcast that the situation currently seemed untenable.
Hinkley subsequently oversaw a club-record 13-game winning streak beginning in round four, and was awarded a two-year extension.
Tredrea, a significant figure in the Adelaide media, has also clashed with Port’s president, David Koch.
On Friday, however, Koch praised the election results.
“Warren grew up at Port Adelaide, he played in a SANFL premiership as a teenager before becoming one of our greatest AFL players,” Koch told the media.
“His career spanned 14 seasons and 255 games, and he led the team to its inaugural AFL title in 2004.
“It will be terrific to have his knowledge and experience around the board table.”
