Breaking: Oklahoma Sooners QB Jackson Arnold Enters Transfer Portal
In a significant development for the Oklahoma Sooners football program, quarterback Jackson Arnold has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal. This move marks the end of his tenure in Norman, Oklahoma, after a season that saw both promise and challenges.
A Promising Start
Arnold, a former five-star recruit and the No. 1 prospect out of Texas in the 2023 recruiting class, joined the Sooners with high expectations. He started nine games in the 2024 season, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities. Over the course of the season, Arnold amassed 1,421 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and three interceptions. Additionally, he contributed 444 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns, including a notable 131-yard rushing performance in a victory over Alabama.
Midseason Bench and Coaching Changes
Despite his early promise, Arnold faced challenges as the season progressed. After a series of turnovers, he was benched in favor of freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. The Sooners’ offense struggled, ranking last in SEC play with an average of 278.6 yards per game. In response, head coach Brent Venables dismissed offensive coordinator Seth Littrell and hired Ben Arbuckle from Washington State. Arbuckle’s system, which had previously been successful with quarterback John Mateer at Washington State, was expected to rejuvenate the Sooners’ offense.

Arnold’s decision to enter the transfer portal comes after discussions with Coach Venables, where he expressed his intention to move on from the program. With two years of eligibility remaining, Arnold is expected to be a highly sought-after prospect in the transfer portal.

With Arnold’s departure, the Sooners’ quarterback depth has been significantly impacted. The team has secured commitments from John Mateer, a standout from Washington State, and Cole Gonzales, a former Southern Conference Player of the Year from Western Carolina.
