Russell Wilson is poised to sign a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of the 2024 NFL season. Wilson was notified last week that he will be released by the Denver Broncos, who would pay the majority of his $39 million salary this season.

According to NFL Network, Russell Wilson has agreed to sign a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers when the new league year begins.

Pittsburgh will pay Wilson’s minimum of $1.21 million, with the Denver Broncos covering the rest of his $39 million contract.

Wilson, 35, went 11-19 in his two seasons with the Broncos after being traded from Seattle. He rebounded from a terrible 2022 season, throwing 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions, but he lost his position to Jarrett Stidham after going 7-8 in coach Sean Payton’s first season last year.

Wilson led the Seahawks to eight playoff berths and a Super Bowl championship over ten seasons.

The Steelers lost a wild-card playoff game with Mason Rudolph as the starting quarterback. Rudolph finished 3-0.

after replacing Kenny Pickett, who was 7-5 before going down with an injury. Mitch Trubisky started the other two games and went 0-2.

Pittsburgh are scheduled to play the Broncos in Denver this upcoming season – and the game could feature a return by Wilson. The NFL is expected to release its league schedule in May.

“We thank Russell for his contributions and dedications to our team and community while wishing him the best “As he continues his career,” the club said on its social media outlets last week. “We are excited to improve this offseason and will have the flexibility to get better through the draft and free agency.”

Wilson said that after signing a nearly quarter-billion dollar extension before playing a down in Denver, the Broncos threatened to sideline him for the last nine games of the season if he did not push back his $37 million injury guarantee in his contract.

Wilson refused to change his contract and played seven more games before being benched, which Payton said was a football decision, not a financial one.
